Obituary
It is with broken hearts that the family of our much loved Doris Elizabeth (Benjamin) Murray announces her passing on Wednesday March 5th at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre. Our sadness is tempered with gratitude for having had her presence in our lives. Her legacy of love and kindness will live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She was born on November 6,1948 in Pugwash, NS. The fourth child and first daughter of her beloved parents, Gordon and Amanda (DesRoches) Benjamin. Her focus on her family began at a very young age. Her 6 siblings brought her comfort and happiness and were her loyal and devoted companions throughout her life. She felt so lucky to have been part of such a wonderful family. She graduated from Pugwash District High School in 1967 and the Nova Scotia Teachers College in 1969. She began teaching at Pugwash Elementary School, later Cyrus Eaton Elementary School in1969. Over the span of her 34 year teaching career she had a positive impact on the lives of everyone who was blessed to have had her as teacher. She had a genuine love and concern for each child who entered her classroom and many people will recall that Mrs. Murray was their favourite teacher. A fact that always brought her great pride. She was a lifelong member of St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church. She was a woman of great faith and you can be assured that if she knew you, at some point she had prayed the rosary for you! She put her faith in action and could often be found doing work in and around the church. She was a founding member and Past President of the St. Thomas More Catholic Women’s League. She served as Sacristan for over 20 years. In 2019 she was awarded the Archdiocese Medal of Merit for exceptional service to the church and community. She was the heart and soul of her family. The maker of meals, the giver of advice, the biggest cheerleader, and if there was work to be done, you could be sure she would be the first one to show up to do it. She is survived by her loving husband of over 55 years, John. Her daughter, Jill (Marc) Blaikie, Wallace and her son John (Desiree) North River. Her grandchildren who were her pride and joy Michael Blaikie (Lindsay) Stewiacke, Hannah Blaikie (Lucas Morrison) Wallace and Kaleb Murray, Whitehorse, NWT.
