Doretta Lameta Barr-Russell Obituary
Doretta Lameta Barr-Russell
December 14, 1929- January 29, 2025
On January 29th at 12:07 p.m. our family lost our matriarch. A vibrant and beautiful soul, Doretta will be fondly remembered by all who knew her.
Doretta — affectionately known by her family and friends as “Aunt Dor” — was born on December 14, 1929 in George’s Plain, Westmoreland, Jamaica. During her formative years she attended George’s Plain Primary School and then went on to train as a seamstress. She spent many years sewing for her community, making sure everyone was in style. Her role as fashion designer also showed up in the way she dressed, and her love of textiles from all over the world. Her interest in fashion included selling African prints which honoured the traditional patterns of western Africa.
Aunt Dor had a gift for creativity and entrepreneurship. She set up a business selling Jamaican puddings and coconut cakes. This was a favourite Friday night treat for the movie goers and the entire community of Frome, Westmoreland where she lived at the time.
In 1979, Aunt Dor left the warm shores of Jamaica with two of her children, Paul and Cheryl to join her eldest son Nelson in Montreal, Canada. While in Montreal she became a homemaker, later working at the Montreal Amateur Athletics Club, supporting the women’s wellness program until her retirement.
Faith and community were always central to our Aunt Dor’s life. In re-establishing herself in Canada she became a member of Abundant Life Faith Centre where she was baptized and served as an usher before moving to Toronto. In her church community she was the go to person for advice, confidentiality, discretion and a good meal. No one needed an invitation to her apartment, they just rang the doorbell and all would be welcome with open arms.
Doretta’s greatest gift was her love for people — she did not take into consideration nationality, age, colour, family ties, religion or political affiliation. She simply loved people and people loved her back. Having spent almost a century on this planet, she has experienced political and social dynamics that have shaped the world we live in today. Her role in the world has always remained a confident, strong woman, who was very clear on who she was and her responsibility to command and orchestrate love, beauty and joy in her corner of the world.
She is predeceased by her loving parents and two husbands, James and Noel. Doretta is survived by her devoted children; Nelson, Neville (Gem), Paul, Cheryl, grandchildren; Keisha, Adrian (Melissa), Toni-Ann (Stephen), Tamara (Matt), and great grandchildren; Jasmine, Jordan, Ava-Madison, Stephen Jr. She also leaves behind step-sons Carl and Lanza, her dear sister Ivy and loving nephews Trevor (Marcia), David, Michael and other great-nieces and -nephews, and many adopted grandchildren and Godchildren, including the Amuzu children, who lovingly called her “Nana.”
Aunt Dor’s presence will be deeply missed, but her love and legacy will live on in all of us.
Rest in peace, Aunt Dor. Your light will never fade.
A Visitation will be held for Aunt Dor on Thursday, March 13, 2025 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM -8:00 PM at McKersie & Early Funeral Home, 114 Main Street East, Milton, Ontario. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, March 14, 2025, at Knox Presbyterian Church, 170 Main Street East, Milton, Ontario, immediately followed by the Burial at Milton Evergreen Cemetery, 230 Ontario Street South, Milton, Ontario.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Knox Presbyterian Church, McKersie & Early Funeral Home, Evergreen Cemetery, Creative Memorials, cherished friends, and family for all your love and support.
