Obituary of Donna-Lou Mowat
Surrounded by her loving children, Mom died peacefully at the Ottawa Hospital – Civic Campus on Thursday March 6, 2025.
Donna-Lou was the beloved daughter of the late Donald and Isabell Mowat, older sister to Dean Mowat (Dawn), and loving aunt of Christina (Kirk) and Krystal. She was a loving mother to Gregory Widdison (Kim) and Sabrina Widdison (Michael) and a proud and fun-loving grandmother to Mehgan and Emma Race-Widdison, as well as Sara and Molly Clark. One of the most heartwarming moments of Donna-Lou’s final days, was a beautiful full-circle moment meeting her great grandson, Maddox, for the first time.
Donna-Lou made Ottawa feel warmer and smaller because of the strong connection she easily and immediately made with others. She embraced her community, cherishing every opportunity to connect with others. Whether it was a birthday eve phone call, or an invitation to join her at a show, she had a way of making acquaintances feel like dear friends. Every friend felt the embrace as her extended family; no one shared in someone else’s joy and happiness quite like Donna-Lou.
When she moved to Ottawa in the early 80s, a single mom, Donna-Lou effortlessly balanced raising her kids while making lasting connections with the children she supervised as a lunch lady at Regina Public School. After beginning a career with the federal government, Donna-Lou continued to care for the well-being of the children in our neighbourhood by becoming a Block Parent and a secretary for the Ottawa chapter. A visit to Donna-Lou’s home revealed her creativity working with stained-glass and the joy in the connections she made providing Avon products for her many friends for over 35 years.
In retirement, Donna-Lou’s community spirit was best expressed through volunteerism. She supported local festivals of all sorts – from the Tulip Festival and Winterlude to the Arts and Music festivals, which were particularly close to her heart. She was a long serving volunteer at both Bluesfest and the Ottawa Folk Festival as well as a proud supporter of the Ottawa Little Theatre.
Donna-Lou was recently described as a ‘warm haven of a person’. Her warmth, kindness, and love for life will be deeply missed and forever remembered by those whose lives she touched.
Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Donna-Lou’s life on April 12, 2025 from 1-4 p.m, at the Ron Kolbus Lakeside Centre
102 Greenview Ave Ottawa.
In memory of Donna-Lou the family asks that donations be made to a local community organization in her honour.
A Tree of Remembrance in memory of Donna-Lou will be planted in the McAlpine Forever Forest in Vankleek Hill.
