It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our dear Mom, Great Grandmother, Grandmother, Mother, Sister, Aunt and a great friend to many on January 17, 2025 at the age of 86. Donna leaves to morn her children 3 sons Russell (Rhonda), Patrick (Joan), Sheldon (Tania Marchinko) and her only daughter Angela; her Grandchildren Dylan Shymko (Emily), Nicholas Shymko (Caitlyn & Great Granddaughter Wrenley), Jonathan Shymko (fiancé Brooklyn), Maximus Shymko and Darius Shymko: her sister Carolyn Crittenden and sister in law Eleanor Polson, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents John and Ellen Polson; her Brothers Reginald Pearson, Dennis Polson, Terrence Polson, Curtis Polson, and Ronald Polson; Sister-in law: Marlene Polson: Her husbands’ Nicholas Shymko and Mark Leschinski: Son Jim Shymko. Donna was born in Broadview, Sk on December 28, 1938 and was raised on the family farm. She left home at the early age of 18 to work as a care giver for a local farmer’s wife. She met her first husband Nicholas Shymko shortly after and got married on July 14/58 and raised 5 children. Donna was a loving person who loved everyone and everything about life. She was always very positive about things and looked for all the positives in life. She was a strong believer in faith and taught Sunday School at Trinity Lutheran Church in her early years. Her heart was huge as she cared for all living things including the many birds that she fed in her beautiful yard, with the hummingbirds being one her favorites. She enjoyed her many flowers, along with her Apple, Cherry and Saskatoon trees. Throughout her life she enjoyed her many pets, they were a big love in her life. She enjoyed fishing and camping, always looking for that one great fishing spot. Upon the death of Nick, June 20, 1983, Donna got her driver’s license and went to work to support her family. She worked as a seamstress and was shortly promoted to manager. She assisted the File Hills First Nation community where she played a major role in developing the Ribbon Shirts which are worn proudly today. She met Mark Leschinski and they were married and moved to Alvena, Sk in April 1987. Donna was a pillar in the community of Alvena for decades. She was the President of the Board of Directors of the Alvena Community Centre and President of the Library Board for many years. At one time, also became the Deputy Mayor of Alvena. She volunteered at the Community Hall and assisted at the Alvena library for many years. She so enjoyed meeting the many people in the community and sharing her love for everyone she met. Upon Mark’s passing, although the adjustment was very hard, she turned the page and enjoyed the last years comforted with her family and friends and her pet cats. Unfortunately her memory began to fade and was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s on September 9/2024. She still knew all her children and grandchildren until the end and told each, she loved us all. Her passing will leave an empty space in the hearts that she loved and also to those that loved her, but all our great memories will help us heal on those difficult days.
We will always love you forever. R.I.P. Mom. A Funeral Service will be held at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 419 Ave E N, Saskatoon, SK at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday February 1, 2025 with Pastor Mark Hedlin officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery. Donations in memory of Donna may be directed to the Canadian Cancer Society.
