It is with profound sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of
Donato “Don” Sangregorio on February 11th 2025 at the Drumheller hospital, following a 5 month battle with cancer.
Don was a beloved father, husband, grandpa and great grandpa.
He was 88 years old.
Born in San Bartolomeo in Galdo, Benevento, Italy, on December 2nd 1936, he was one of four children to Antonio and Carmela Sangregorio.
Don leaves behind a legacy of unconditional love and hard work that will forever be cherished by his family and all who knew him.
Donato is survived by his wife Maria Sangregorio of 63 years who he cherished and relished in taking care of all her needs as they got older and sons Michele and Carmine. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Patrick, Matteo, Christiano, Adriana, Donny, Bria and Dario, as well as two great grandsons Jule and Delano.
As well as his youngest sister Angelina and many more relatives from all over Canada and the USA especially his favourite aunt Zia Gelsomina Cioffi And family whom he will dearly miss as much as they will all miss him.
Donato immigrated to Montreal, Quebec in the 1950s where he met his true love and wife Maria.
They moved to Calgary, Alberta in the late 60’s with two sons, Michele and Antonio. After welcoming a third son, Carmine, their family was complete. Don worked for Rocky-view County and then waste management for the city of Calgary for a combined 30 years. His work ethic and leadership skills led him to be involved in the implementation of a municipal recycling program. As a dedicated public servant, Don took pride in everything he did and especially being part of the recycling program for the city and training new drivers as he finished his career.
Don had a passion for bringing old things back to life. His children and grandchildren recall how he could tinker with anything that was broken to find a way to make it work again. He loved attending auctions and would bring the grandkids along to small towns and hamlets in Alberta on the hunt for treasures and animals he could bring home to their Delacour farm. Together with Maria, Don raised chickens, sheep and goats among other farm creatures with the help of Maggie, their sheepdog, and donkeys Leo and Sophia – all loved dearly by the grandkids.
Don and Maria retired in 1996 and moved to Drumheller where he continued to plant a garden, prune his trees and mow the lawn religiously. With his companion Dogs & Best friend London then Leo, He could be found outside all summer long among the lilacs that grew the perimeter of his property. Yes, he planted those too, and many friends and visitors would rave about the wonderful lilac smell.
His generous heart and unwavering dedication to his family will continue to inspire us for years to come.
Born and raised Catholic, Donato was a big follower of the teachings of Padre Pio and tried to emulate everything he did in life to praise God.

Now he is reunited in Heaven with all his loved ones who have already passed on.
Donato is predeceased by his brother Michele, his mother and father Carmela and Antonio, his son Antonio, and sister, Anna.
Don will be cremated and brought back to Montreal sometime this summer to remain in his family’s cemetery plot.
Our family will remember him for the unconditional love, wisdom, and generous spirit. Don had caretaker qualities and truly was the epitome of the strong, silent type. He didn’t say much, but when he did, you listened and understood it to be meaningful.
We would like to thank all the people who helped him over the last few months from the
Drumheller hospital, Arthur Child Cancer clinic and home care.
Thank you all for taking such great care of him until the very end.
