Donald Walter Smith, aged 93, passed away peacefully. A dedicated teacher by profession, Don graduated from the University of Manitoba with a bachelor’s in education and spent his career teaching in St. Laurent, MB. He spent his retirement years in Gimli, Manitoba, where he found joy in the great outdoors. He cherished every moment with his beloved wife, Jo-Anna Smith, and was a devoted father and grandfather. Don also loved to play golf with friends and family, creating many cherished memories on the golf course.
Don married Jo-Anna in 1964, and they relocated to Lac du Bonnet, where he ran a one-room school. Later, they lived in Pine Falls and Silver Falls, starting a family and having two sons, Jon and Kris. The family created wonderful memories in Silver Falls and later in Winnipeg. Don commuted daily from Winnipeg to St. Laurent for work, ensuring his sons had the opportunities a big city could provide.
Don’s favorite day was Friday, as it marked the start of weekends and summers at their beloved cottage in Gimli, affectionately called « Kofi. » He spent his time there fixing up the cottage and enjoying the beach life.
Don was predeceased by his wife Jo-Anna, his son Jon, and his parents. He is survived by his son Kris (wife Marnie) and his three grandchildren, Abby, Heidi, and Courtney. The family extends a special thank you to Ken Winzoski for making Don laugh from the time they met to his last day, and to Vista Park Lodge for their care.
A quote from family and friends: « Don was the most dedicated father to his sons and grandchildren. He enjoyed a good laugh, a good beer and was kind to all. »
A service is not planned at this time, but a meet and greet will be arranged in the Spring.
