Donald Warner Obituary
WARNER, Donald Arthur
September 4, 1938 – January 15, 2025
It is with sadness that the family announces the passing of Don Warner at the age of 86 in Balcarres, SK. Born on the family farm near Kennedy, SK, Don was the eldest of 7 children of Aline and James Arthur Warner. Don married Shirley Goulstone in 1960, and they settled in Kipling where they owned a farm implement dealership as well as a car dealership. In 1968, Don and Shirley relocated to Balcarres, SK where Shirley resumed her career as a teacher, and Don spent several years in sales including 8 years with Redhead Equipment.
Don was always very involved in the community, serving the Town of Balcarres as Mayor, Town Administrator, and Local Coroner. His work was focused in creating business development, promoting growth and investment, and supporting enhancements for the development of Balcarres as a thriving community. His contributions extended to several committees, predominantly related to business development across southeastern Saskatchewan. Serving as Local Coroner for the Town and area required Don to work and travel throughout the many surrounding communities, which added to the network of people who would come to know him.
Don was a character; you wouldn’t recognize him without a smirk or grin, especially after one of his witty one-liners. Don loved his partner, Shirley, their pets whether dogs or cows, his extended family, and his many friends in and around Balcarres. He loved a big truck, cowboy hats and boots, and big belt buckles, and fighting for everything that would benefit his community. Don loved many things, but nothing quite as much as life’s little pleasures, like a good drink of scotch!
Don and Shirley were both very proud of their involvement in all aspects of Balcarres. Ask anyone who has a connection to Balcarres if they knew Don or Shirley and the answer is always yes – through Shirley’s teaching career or Don advocating for their Town. They also started a herd of Simmental Cattle which became both a hobby and a business venture. Don and Shirley spent their retirement travelling, camping and cheering on their favourite CFL team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders, providing the odd commentary to their Calgary relatives (during the winning years)! Don enjoyed listening in at coffee row – or rather, talking – and waving to everyone he knew or didn’t know, as he drove around town.
Don was predeceased by his wife, Shirley, infant daughter Mona Lynn, parents James Arthur and Aline Warner, parents-in-law Edgar and Myrtle Goulstone, sister and brother-in-law, Iris and Calvin Warner, nephew Brad Owen, and many aunts and uncles. Don is survived by his siblings Marie (Jack) Driscoll, Lawrence (Edna) Warner, Linda (Murray) Roberts, Harold (Vicki) Warner, Clifford (Ann) Warner, Rita (Harold) Yarn, sister-in-law Carol (Keith) Owen, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Thank you to all of you who live and take care of each other in the community of Balcarres, all of you who are caregivers working at the Balcarres Integrated Centre in your different capacities, for the care you gave to Don, the teasing you endured, and the laughs you shared. And in the words of Don to all those who loved and cared for him and all those who love Balcarres, Take It Easy!
A service to honour Don will be held in the spring of 2025, date to be determined. Arrangements entrusted to Conley Funeral Home, Fort Qu’Appelle and Raymore, SK. 306-332-0555.
