Domenico Santoro was born in Balsorano, Abruzzo, Italy on October 29 1927 to Anthonio Santoro and Rosa Martini.
On June 3rd, 1948 he married Alba Norcia who predeceased him.
He is survived by his daughters Rosa (Mike), Franca (Gianmario) and Sandra. His grandchildren Teresa (Alessandro) and Filagro (Amanda), his great-grandchildren Gianluca, Massimo and Mattia.
For much of his life he worked hard to provide for his family going wherever he could to make this success a reality. In 1950 he went to work in France, a couple of years later he worked in Switzerland. He then emigrated to Canada in 1957, where he was joined by his wife and children on July 1st, 1960.
Domenico was an avid outdoorsman. He would venture to the far reaches of Ontario in search of the majestic moose. The trip was long, 24-48 hours north of Toronto, often doing these trips alone and without any stops. He created a bond with the Regional Native Chief « Lionel ». They had a long and fruitful friendship, often staying at Lionel’s home on these hunting trips. Most of the time he would chose to build camp and live in the wild with nature. He’d load up his Super Duty Pick-up and leave for weeks at a time equipped with little more than a map.
When he wasn’t hunting or fishing he was tending to his garden with his wife or making their famous prosciutto or sugo.
He was a master builder and mason. He built multiple homes and a family cottage in Innisfil. He lived most of his life at St. Clair and Dufferin, like many other Italians at the time, the house was rented out as a « Rooms house » to other immigrants at the time. In the mid-90s they moved to their home on Flamborough and at the age of 70 he completed a full addition to his post-war era home. Armed with a couple of labourers, he managed to complete most of the build on his own.
To say that Domenico worked hard to provide is an understatement. To know him is to know he was determined to create a life of success for his family. His life stories are full of travel, adventure and strength.
Relatives and friends are welcome to Bernardo Funeral Home (2960 Dufferin St., south of Lawrence Ave. W.) for visitation on Friday, April 25, 2025 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Bernard de Clairvaux Church (1789 Lawrence Ave. W., east of Jane St.) on Saturday, April 26, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. Domenico will then be laid to rest at Assumption Cemetery (6933 Tomken Rd., at Derry Rd., Mississauga).
