Obituary of Dolly Whelan
It is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of our much-loved mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great grandmother at Algoma Residential Community Hospice in Sault Ste. Marie on Saturday March 22, 2025 after a short and courageous battle with cancer, at the age of 89. She was surrounded by her loving and supportive family who helped care for her during her journey over the past year.
Predeceased by her beloved husband John. Supportive and caring mother of Sharon Marcolini (Tom), Debbie Whelan (Denis Leane), John Whelan (Elke) and Melanie Whelan (John Mottl). Beloved granny of Elizabeth (Max Johnson) and Seán Whelan Marcolini, Matthew Harper (Jessica), Amy Harper, Quinn Gelmon and Courtney Gelmon. Great grandmother of Juliette, Madeline and Cián. Predeceased by her parents Jack and Marija Hladin. Cherished sister of Jim Hladin (Freda), Celia Lavigne (Emile), Jack (Jocelyne) and predeceased by sister Verna Hladin, and brother Dennis Hladin (Diane). Lovingly remembered by her many nieces and nephews.
Dolly was born and spent her early years in the small railway settlement of Elsas, Ontario, located on the CN line northwest of Foleyet, and on the shore of Lake Kapuskasing. It was a challenging life on a small farm, where she acquired her famous aptitude for hard work and the drive to persevere. She left Elsas for Sudbury to go to high school as a young teenager where she eventually met and married a young Irishman named John Whelan. This was the beginning of a whole new family connection in Ireland. It is a bond that has been strongly maintained to this day.
Dolly’s main purpose in life was to work both outside the home (at Dominion Stores in Sudbury, Battistelli’s in Lively) and with her husband to support the construction of their home in Waters Twp west of Sudbury, and the raising of their young family. The establishment of substantial vegetable and flower gardens on the property was a further testimony to her hard work and perseverance. Dolly and John later purchased a water access-only property on Lake Manitou located on Manitoulin Island. It became a labour of love for them in their retirement years.
And Dolly made it all go. No one could organize the packing and transport of food either on the train to Elsas for the summer or on the trailer and boat into Manitou and host and feed work parties over the years like Dolly. She always put her children and family ahead of herself. She was a homemaker who loved to cook, garden and enjoy the great outdoors, she was a naturalist from a young age. Traditional Ukrainian cabbage roll and pedaheh recipes have been passed down to the next generations. She recorded family history with her camera and enjoyed reading, cross-stitch and knitting. She fought the aging process with a vengeance, with daily exercise and continual activity in and around her house and her apartments after she moved to Sault Ste. Marie to be closer to family. The cancer diagnosis slowed, but didn’t stop her until the last few months. She has passed that work ethic onto her children and grandchildren, a legacy that will continue to live on.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Dr. Spadafora, Dr. Booth, Dr. Gonzales, Dr. Colizza and their staff in Sault Ste. Marie, Dr. Al Mazouri, Dr. Lam and staff in Sudbury and the PSWs and nurses at Bayshore (Leah, Rochelle, Nikki, and Jeff) and finally the wonderful staff at ARCH for their help in caring for Dolly and supporting the family during this difficult time.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at Precious Blood Cathedral on Friday, March 28, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Jeff Shannon officiating. A Celebration of Life will follow in Sudbury in the summer with interment in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Walden, ON.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to ARCH would be appreciated. Dolly has also asked those who have known her to honour her memory by performing a random act of kindness. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
