Diane Marilyn Melnick
Sydney
We, the family of Diane Melnick, regret to announce her passing on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born September 17, 1945, in Whitney Pier, Diane was the daughter of the late Joseph and Myrtle (Mercer) Melnick.
Diane’s work life was as diverse and full of character as she was. At Kay’s Kozy Korner, she greeted everyone with a smile and a quick wit, making the counter feel like the heart of the neighborhood. Her time at The Society for Treatment of Autism of Nova Scotia (STANS) was more than just a job—it was where she found another family, a group of incredible people who will miss her deeply. And then there was her « Fort Mac » chapter, an adventure of a lifetime. Working in the oil sands, she faced every challenge with grit and good humor, proving once again that there was nothing she couldn’t handle.
Diane’s love for history and storytelling found a perfect home at Cossit House, where she was known as “Mrs. Dory.” With a twinkle in her eye and a wealth of knowledge, she delighted visitors with tales of the past, bringing history to life in a way only she could.
She had a deep and abiding love for animals, always finding space in her heart—and often in her home—for a furry friend in need. Diane’s beloved dog, Ginger, was her constant companion, and she supported animal rescue efforts throughout her life.
Diane is survived by her daughters, Rachael (John) Adams, Coxheath, and Alexis (Terry) Campbell, affectionately known as her other daughter; grandchildren, Chris (Julianna), Meadowvale, NS; Will, and Aubrey, whom she considered her grandsons; great-grandchildren, Willow, Aurora, Quinn, and Sage; sister, Carolyn (Tom) Arsenault, Halifax; sisters-in-law, Ruby Melnick and Elaine Melnick; and cousin, Kathy (Steve) Rodgers Gavel, who was more like a sister than a cousin; niece, Allison Melnick, her most trusted phone companion; and numerous other family and friends that loved the quirky and lovable “Lady Di”.
In addition to her parents, Diane was predeceased by her brothers, Joe and Dave Melnick.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Sydney Memorial Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Cape Breton SPCA in honour of Diane’s lifelong love of animals.
The many heartfelt tributes shared by friends and family online are a testament to the kindness, wisdom, and laughter she brought into the world. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. Our Eing.
