David Guy Obituary
With heartfelt sadness we announce the passing of David Martin Guy on Monday, April 28th, 2025, at the Miners’ Memorial Manor in Sydney Mines. Born in North Sydney on December 15th, 1936, David was the son of the late Wilfred and Kathleen (Yorke) Guy.
In his early years he worked for Maritime Tel & Tel and L. Rahey’s grocery store in North Sydney, delivering groceries to the northernmost regions of Cape Breton, making many friends along the way. David later worked as a letter carrier with Canada Post Corporation, retiring in 1997 after 30 years of service. During his years at Canada Post he worked as one of Santa’s elves, replying to thousands of Santa Claus letters. David found joy in spreading the magic of Christmas to each child, sending them lovingly handwritten replies.
A devoted parishioner, he was a long-time lector at Immaculate Conception Church in Sydney Mines. Parish members may recall his voice ringing throughout the church, even though he wasn’t a member of the choir! David served on Parish Council and was a KOC 4th Degree member and former Grand Knight. In his spare time, David was heavily involved in his local community. He was the first board member of the Northside Homemakers Society, serving for 37 years, some of those years as Chairman of the Board. He was past president of the Board of Directors of Princess Credit Union, charter member of the Sydney Mines Kinsmen Club, para-mutual manager of Tartan Downs, a board member of the Cape Breton Regional Housing Authority and was a board member of the Sydney Mines District Community Centre. David had a passion for politics and was a former Municipal Councillor for the Town of Sydney Mines. He was chairperson of the Board of Employment Insurance, Board of Referees. He was Chairman of the Northside Community Futures Economic Development Association and member of the North Sydney Legion where he enjoyed lively games of cribbage.
David was a sports enthusiast. He was an avid fan of the Leafs, the Dodgers, and harness racing. A 2017 family trip to New York City was highlighted by a tour of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and a night at Meadowlands Raceway in New Jersey where he was honoured by having a featured race in his name after which he made the presentation to the winning driver. One was a religious experience and the other was a close second.
His sense of humour was well known to anyone who called the house. If he managed to get to the phone before anyone else, he answered it by saying, “House of the Lord, Jesus speaking.”
For all his dedication to his church and his community, David was, above all, a family man. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His unwavering support and guidance was the foundation that he gave to all his loved ones. David is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Angela Mary “Jillie” (Shinners), and his children, Ann Frances McGean (Gordie), Dave (Linda), Brian (Shawn), Michael (Theresa), Kim Cholock (Calvin), Mark (Laurie) and by his grandchildren, Kelli (Dan), Liam (Erin), Jenna (Laura), Emily (Ryan), Corey (Jen), Kyle (Madison), Maeridith (Ian) and Tyler. He is also survived by his great grandchildren, Maverick, Rowen, Ella, Isla, and Grant. David is survived by his special niece and Goddaughter, Ann Marie MacGillivary. He is survived by sisters Mary Donald, Sheila (Shaun) McMillan, and Maria (Greg) Westhaver, by sisters-in-law, Georgie Cogan, Ellen Cullen, and Evonne Higgins
Struthers, and by bother-in-law, Ronald “Butch” Pye. David is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
David is predeceased by his daughter-in-law, Carol Ann Guy, brothers Wilfred “Buddy” (Patsy) Guy, and Leonard “Sonny” (Joan) Guy, and sisters Helen (Ray) Morgan, Lexie (George) Wilkie, and Marjorie (Robert) Power. He is also predeceased by sisters-in-law, Frances Pye, Mona (Vernon) Geddes, Lorraine (Doug) Francis, by brothers-in-law Sonny Cullen, James Cogan, and Stan Struthers, and by nieces Kathleen Bennett and Madonna “Donna” Jackson.
The family would like to thank the staff of Miner’s Memorial Manor, Dr. Alexander Wawer, Dr. Irene Osagie, the staff of the Northside General Hospital and Eddie Orrell. A special thank you to Tania Bond MacNeil and Jackie Egan MacDonald for their care and support and to Tessie and Doug Forrest who were longtime neighbours and friends. The family would also like to send special thanks to Ann Marie MacGillivary for her unwavering support for David and his family.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, May 2nd at 2:00 p.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, North Sydney with Rev. Doug MacDonald officiating. Reception to follow at North Sydney Legion. Burial will be held at a later date. Donations can be made to the Northside Homemakers Service Society or a charity of your choice.
