We are saddened to announce the passing of David Keith Anderson, 83, of Upper LaHave, on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 at Fishermen’s Memorial Hospital, Lunenburg. Known by family and friends as Dave, he will be deeply missed by many.
Born in Verdun, Quebec, he was a son of George and Helen (McAllister) Anderson. He spent most of his childhood living in the Toronto area. As a teenager he joined Sea Cadets and learned to sail, joining the Royal Canadian Navy after high school.
Dave served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1958-1963, moving to Halifax where he met his first wife Joan at the sailing club. He then went on to work for Dalhousie University as a Technician before taking on a role with the Department of Agriculture in Fredericton, New Brunswick for eight years. He continued the rest of his working life with Highliner Foods in Lunenburg from 1976-1992. He held various positions with Highliner and travelled the world as part of his career.
Dave had a love for Judo and was very involved in the judo community for over 60 years. He served in several positions, including as the President of Nova Scotia and New Brunswick Judo Associations and earned a seat on the Board of Directors of Judo Canada. Dave coached at many clubs over the years, most recently at the Lunenburg Judo Club where he continued to assist until this past Fall. He was recognized with his Rokudan promotion from Judo Canada in May 2025.
In addition to his passion for sailing and judo, Dave enjoyed music, especially jazz and blues. He was also a talented woodworker and artist, creating intricate, high relief wood carvings and building furniture in his free time.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; daughters, Dawn (Mark) Prokopiou, London, ON, Kate Mercer (Steven Lynk), Dartmouth; son, Jamie Mercer, Campbell River, BC; sister, Gail (Gerry) Bing, Errington, BC; grandchildren, Charlie Mercer and Oliver and Audrey Lynk.
Besides his parents, Dave is predeceased by his first wife, Joan Jollimore.
The family extends their gratitude to all the health care providers who cared for Dave during his battle with cancer over the past few years. Especially the teams at Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital who provided excellent care, shared a laugh and made him and his family feel so supported during this challenging time.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy 3, Lunenburg. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 10th at 2 pm at the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, Rev. Vivian Moores officiating. Reception to follow.
Memorial donations may be made to the Health Services Foundation of the South Shore.
