Dave Falk Obituary
David Falk went home to be with his Savior on January 25, 2025. He was born on March 29, 1930, at Hussar, Alberta to David and Anna (Klassen) Falk, the second of 12 children. The family moved to a farm at Sunnyslope in 1934, when David was 4.
He attended Salem school at Sunnyslope to Grade 9 when he joined his father in farming. He attended the Mennonite Brethren Bible School in Coaldale for a term, at the age of 18. Formal school may have ended, but he continued to read and educate himself throughout his life.
Dave married Selma Megli on October 21, 1951. He and Selma started married life farming in partnership with his father on a rented farm west of Sunnyslope. When the land sold in 1958, Dave and Selma moved to the Linden area where he began the next chapter in his career as a grain buyer for National Grain. This work took the family to Trochu for a year and then back to Linden where Dave began work at the Linden Co-op initially as the manager and eventually as manager of the Lumber yard. After he retired, Dave continued to drive a school bus, which he had done for a number of years.
Dave had great interest in sports as evidenced when he played hockey, softball, and Senior’s Slow pitch. He took up umpiring as well as enjoyed curling. He also often had his .22 with him during the summer in case a gopher happened to cross his path!
Fishing was something he thoroughly enjoyed, although he did not particularly like to eat fish! Camping goes with fishing and the family spent most summer holidays at fishing lakes with the Wilbert Penner family. He and Selma enjoyed travelling and were happy to visit Europe and Eastern Canada. He recently expressed that he would still love to travel.
Horses played a big part in his life. His children all remember him working with them and being able to play with foals in the yard. He loved riding and breaking horses. Dave was artistic and his woodworking spanned from making furniture to making models and carving.
Dave’s faith was very much a part of his life. He was not a man to talk all that much about it. He would when asked, but he mostly just lived what he believed as evidenced in how he treated others.
He was very involved in his church and sang in the choir and different groups. Music was something that he loved. He played the cello, violin, mandolin, and harmonica.
Sadly, Selma passed away in 2020 after 68 years of marriage. Dave moved into the Linden Lodge shortly before her passing and lived there until December 23, 2024, when he was admitted to the Three Hills hospital.
He is survived by his children Ruth (Eric) Poettcker, Edie (Allan) Shantz, Don (Liz) Falk, Judy (Dave) Thiessen, and Vicki (Al) Dougan, 12 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Also, brothers Hank, Ben (Maxine), and Gary (Roxy) and sisters Ann Toews, Mary (Darwin) Findley, and Eleanor (Ed) Martens, and sister-in-law Faye Falk. He was predeceased by Selma, son in law Doug Thurn, and 3 grandchildren, his parents, brothers Jake and John, and sisters Tina, Margaret Toews, and Agnes Toews.
The day before he passed, he found comfort in a family member reading the 23rd Psalm to him. Some time after the words were read, he audibly said “Beside Still Waters.” There is comfort and rest in those words!
