It is with profound
sadness that the family of the late Charles (Charlie) Black
of Riverview announces his passing at the age of 83 on March 5, 2025
at the Moncton Hospital. Born in Bearsden, Glasgow, Scotland, he was
the son of the late Charles and Catherine (née Lauder)
Black.
Charles embarked on a
life at sea at the age of 16, eventually rising to the rank of Captain
in 1973 and traveling to more than 80 countries. He met the love of
his life, Vida, in 1974 in the small port town of Botwood,
Newfoundland and they married later the same year. In 1989, he
« Came Ashore » as a harbor pilot for Atlantic
Pilotage Authority.
Charles had a passion
for fishing and spent many early mornings fishing with his best
friend, Doug. When he was home from sea, he enjoyed camping with his
family, usually within casting distance of a river.
He also spent many
days on a labour of love with his wooden boat, the Ran-a-Tan, sailing
it around part of Newfoundland one summer and then for many years
enjoying time on the water with family and friends in the beautiful
Bay of Exploits
His Adventurous spirt
continued into retirement; Charles completed a cross-county Trek
seeing much of Canada and beyond to the Alaskan coast, visited China,
cruised South America, Antarctica, and Europe, and enjoyed fly fishing
excursions to New Zealand. He cherished his time in Newfoundland and
Scotland equally and was determined to return to Scotland in the fall
of 2024 to see his beloved sisters.
Charles was a constant
storyteller and practical joker throughout his life. He Thoroughly
enjoyed regaling friends and family with tales of his adventures
across the globe, ranging from the Far East to the high Arctic. He was
a devoted companion to his beloved dogs Mac, Clipper, Kojack, Scruffy,
and Angus.
His grandchildren Held
a special place in his heart, and he enjoyed an extended over winter
visit with Mackenzie and Abigail when they were little. Gavin and
Charlotte frequently visited him over the past seven years, ever since
he relocated to Riverview to be nearer to family.
Charles will be missed
and remembered by his wife of 50 years, Vida Black; son Gregor
(Rachel) Black; daughter Catherine (Byron Bridger) Black; sisters
Jennifer (Harry) Draffan and Rosemary (James) Ogilvie; Brother-In-Laws
Gordon Woolridge, Eric (Annie) Woolridge and Bruce (Shelly) Woolridge;
Sister-in-law Sadie (Gordon) Edwards; grandchildren
Mackenzie, Abigail, Gavin, and Charlotte; and many nieces and nephews;
Extended Family Douglas and Valerie Tweedie and Family.
Aside from his
parents, Charles was predeceased by his sister Elizabeth Neilson,
brother-in-law Alexander (Sandy) Neilson, brother Reginald Mason, and
sister-in-law Joan Mason.
A special thank you to
Dr. Julian Dupuis and the staff and volunteers of the extra mural
palliative care team and the oncology team at The Moncton
Hospital.
His family will be
receiving relatives and friends on Monday, March 10, 2025, from 11:00
am to 1:00 pm at Cobb’s Funeral Home and Cremation Center,
