Cecylia Zwara
November 22, 1927- May 15, 2025
On May 15, 2025 Cecylia Zwara loving wife of predeceased husband Alfons, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed peacefully at her LTC home in Oakville. Born in Boria Poland to Anthony and Janina Bednarski on November 22,1927 Cecylia grew up with her sister Alina and brother Bogdan in a rural village. Her schooling was cut short by the World War and she was sent to Germany to work on a farm for the duration.
In her early 20’s she accepted passage to Canada arriving at Pier 21 in Halifax in 1949. At a New Years dance in 1950 she met Dad who she married the following year. They were married for 71 years. Mom was very active in the Polish Women’s Alliance Circle in New Toronto and on Davenport Road Kol Polek Grupa 7. They were known for their slogans of “Long Live Canada” and “Long Iive the Polish Community in Canada”
Mom was one of the ladies who cooked for every occasion at the Polish Hall whether it was for a wedding, a dance or any special holiday. These lovely ladies would cook feasts of Polish food for sometimes hundreds of people and serve to the table. It was indescribably delicious! And in todays terms would be described as an “all you can eat buffet”
Mom went to Poland many times to see all her relatives and family as she was the only one at that time in Canada. Together Mom and Dad visited many countries travelling to Spain, Portugal and Cuba. They travelled across Canada seeing the West Coast and British Columbia. They saw much of the United States through its coasts up and down Florida and California.
Mom, of course, cooked at home as well. She had a supply of apples, peaches and pears from the fruit trees in our backyard. Pie season was from summer into the fall at our home. The pies always made up for the liver meals we had to eat occasionally. In the winter we were so spoiled with all the vegetables and fruits that Mom had preserved. All winter we were able to eat all the foods that were out of season thanks to Mom’s canning skills.
We were lucky to grow up in an age where mothers stayed home to care for their families. This unpaid work at home was so more valuable for family life.
Mom and Dad moved back to the Orangeville Grand Valley area after retirement back to where they first started their life in Canada. On a half acre of land they had chickens, fresh eggs, and all sorts of vegetables in a huge garden. What they didn’t have they bought from friends’ farms.
Mom as well as Dad loved Canada for its opportunities of raising a family, its liberties and peace. She loved to visit Poland but always said she was staying in Canada.
Mom leaves her children Suzanne, Steve (Diane), Joe (Louise), Karen (Dave) and grandchildren Jessica, Sarah, Adam, Jennifer, Crystal, Stacey, Carole & special Brenden, great grandchildren Mila, Penelope, Abbey, Austen, Caleb, Caitlin, Gavin & Mackenzie.
It is with much love and appreciation for everything Mom has done for us that we will always remember her sacrifices and love for us.
Mom always knew her rock, our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and knew when the things of the world faded in whose loving care she would be.
Good bye Mom, Mama, Babja
Till we meet again, all our love, Rest in Peace
In Lieu of flowers donations to the Halton Down Syndrome Association would be appreciated.
A Graveside Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday May 20, 2025 at Grand Valley Union Cemetery ( 51 Cooper Street, Grand Valley, ON, L9W 5W6) starting at 1:00pm

“Proclaim that all mankind are like grass,
they last no longer than wild flowers, Yes
grass withers and flowers fade, when the
Lord sends the wind blowing over them,
People are no more enduring than grass.
Yes, grass withers and flowers fade, but the
word of our God endures forever”
Isaiah 40:6-8
