Cecilia « CC » Georgina Winton (née Newman)
With deep sorrow, we announce the death of Cecilia Georgina Winton on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at the age of 95 years.
Cecilla is lovingly remembered by her brother Victor Newman, sister Andrea Renaud, nieces Lisa (Perry Boser), and Michelle (Sonke Martens) and their children Nell and Lex. Her nephews Victor Newman Jr. (Dawna) and their children Raina and Quinton, nephew Jeff Newman (Cathy) and their children Mathew (Cassandra) and their daughter Katelyn and son Levi as well as nephew Jake Newman (Amber) and their daughter, Ellory are also saddened by her passing.
She was predeceased by husband Paul Winton, mother Cecilia, her father Fred, brother John, and nephew Nathan Syska.
Cecilia was born in Edmonton on December 22, 1930. She often shared memories of growing up in the ‘30s and the love her parents bestowed on her and their charity to others who were suffering in those hard times. These childhood models of kindness inspired her all her life.
Her father died when she was 14 years old and as the eldest child, she was determined to help her mother and three siblings. She was a hard worker determined to succeed. Despite financial difficulties, she attended the University of Alberta three years later, where she studied math and chemistry. At the age of 18, she left home to teach in Manning returning two years later to the university to earn a B.Ed. and begin teaching for Edmonton Catholic Schools where she taught for the rest of her career, eventually becoming an administrator and earning a master’s degree. Her love of teaching led her to producing yearly musical productions where students benefitted by her musical and theatrical knowledge.
Cecilia was the head and heart of our family. She loved to host family dinners and celebrated every occasion from birthdays and important holidays to our personal successes. She was extravagantly generous and kind. The cabin she designed, and her husband built was where she most loved to be. She especially loved to host family and enjoyed the children’s antics most of all. Whenever we were in trouble or in doubt, we often sought her out for comforting words of solace or wise advice. As a teacher she also helped several of us with the subjects we dreaded most and several of us owe our success to her academic help. Most importantly, we knew she loved each of us in spite our personal failings and if her kindness or advice didn’t help, her prayers often did.
Cecilia had an unshakable faith in a loving and merciful God and practiced her faith daily through prayer, respect and kindness to all, and the support of many charities. She was also involved in her church from the age of 7 when she began singing in the choir until she retired from the choir in her eighties. Her beautiful soprano voice was enjoyed at many weddings and other events. Cecilia’s involvement in the church was varied. She was a Minister of the Eucharist, a choir member, a reader, a greeter, and a member and head of the liturgy committee. We recall her baking tarts, cupcakes and pies which we rushed to buy and sewing many aprons and other useful things in preparation for the bazaars which were held twice a year. Her faith gave her the strength and determination to fight through several bouts of cancer. Her faith is an inspiration to all of us.
She was very gifted and gave her kindness and love freely, so all who knew her loved and respected her. She was indeed a « treasure » and a blessing in our lives. We will miss her always and she is now our inspiration.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, February 13, 2025, at 11 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, 11828 – 85 Street, Edmonton.
