Cecilia Abbatangeli Obituary
Cecilia Maria Abbatangeli
March 9, 1945 – December 8, 2024
A Celebration of Life for Cecilia will be held on Saturday January 11, 2025 at 3:00 pm in the Party Room of her condo located at 443 Centennial Forest Drive, Milton, ON – The Centennial Forest Heights Condos
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Mom and Vovo, Cecilia Maria Abbatangeli, at the age of 79 on Sunday, December 8, 2024 at Ian Anderson House. Cecilia left this world holding the hands of her two beloved children.
Cecilia loved her children and their families dearly. Cecilia leaves behind her son Anthony and his wife Julie C and her daughter Angela and her wife Julie B. Cecilia also leaves behind her four adoring grandchildren, Sofia, Sara, Liam and Ben as well as fur puppies, Hank and Coltrane. Cecilia was a very loving and proud Vovo. She never missed a dance or music recital, play, baseball, hockey or soccer game. She was a devoted fan of each of her grandkids. She was proud of everything her children and grandchildren accomplished and as a result they all felt her love and pride.
Cecilia was born in San Miguel Portugal on March 9, 1945 to Irondina and Manuel Andrade. She immigrated to Canada as a teenager and found work as a talented seamstress in a fashion house on Adelaide Street in Toronto. It was there that a co-worker saw this lovely girl from Portugal and thought that she would be perfect for her son. This young man, Mike Abbatangeli, would pick up his mom from work at times and he would run into Cecilia. They quickly and fiercely fell in love, despite his first language being Italian and hers Portuguese. It was an undeniable connection and they decided not only to, “learn to speak English together,” but to marry and build a beautiful life together. Mike and Cecilia married on October 9, 1965. They raised Anthony and Angela in Toronto and were married for 36 years before Mike’s passing at the age of 60.
Cecilia was a devoted wife and her love and commitment to Mike remained despite his passing 22 years ago. In the face of her sadness having lost her soul mate too soon, Cecilia had the strength and spirit to move forward and rebuild a new life, never letting go of her past, but making a new life and cherishing memories she was so very proud of.
Cecilia is also survived by her siblings, Altino, Teresa and Fatima. Cecilia was also a cherished Aunt and Great Aunt to her nieces and nephews. Cecilia will be missed by her in-laws and their families, the Cnossen’s and Burnett’s, who always held a special place for Cecilia. Dearest family friend, Chris, referred to Cecilia as his Toronto Mom, and she loved him dearly too. Cecilia also leaves behind many treasured friends, including those in her building on Centennial Forest Drive in Milton where she moved 14 years ago.
Cecilia was an exceptionally talented seamstress and loved fashion as well as many forms of art. Cecilia loved working with designers and was very proud to be a part of the Beker fashion legacy that continues to this day. Her former Boss Ron Beker described her « A one of a kind talent. A combination of Smart and Talented and such a deep love for the art of dressmaking that is unique. Even 15 years after retiring, she is still sadly missed »
From fashion, to art and music, Cecilia found the true spirit of art and lived looking outside of the ordinary. It is a passion you see in her children and grandchildren and she would be proud to know that this will continue beyond her time in this world.
Cecilia loved listening to Anthony play the guitar. She was truly his biggest fan. She placed that guitar in Anthony’s hands at the age of 4, supporting him even though he couldn’t reach the chords. Her unwavering support remained through his electric guitar and rock band phase. She was proud of his work as a jazz musician and never missed an opportunity to see him play. Even in her last days, as Anthony played at her bedside, her pride and enjoyment of his talent remained.
Cecilia was exceptionally proud of Angela and her family. Cecilia was a traditional, religious and rule following lady from San Miguel Portugal. She was the first to pick up the phone every year on June 1st to say “Happy Pride” to her daughter. The Pride was ours in her though, in how she made us and everyone feel unconditionally loved and accepted. It was truly a gift.
Cecilia was religious, a devote Catholic. She strongly believed that God and Jesus is about Love and Acceptance, that one never judged or had an opinion about another. Cecilia was incredibly supportive of her children and would tell everyone she met about her modern family. She was an extremely kind soul, often reminding us that “everyone you meet is someone else’s baby, that’s how we should treat people.”
Cecilia’s final days in Ian Anderson hospice were exceptionally caring and peaceful. The team of nurses, PSWs and volunteers at IAH cared for not just Cecilia, but the entire family with the utmost kindness and empathy. We would like to thank everyone at IAH as well as the doctors and nurses at Milton and Oakville Trafalgar Hospitals.
In Lieu of flowers, we ask that family and friends contribute to a “day of care” at Ian Anderson House. A fund has been set up in Cecilia’s name and we encourage family and friends to contribute in her honour.
Cecilia’s family is forever grateful for the love, kindness and compassion from family and friends. Cecilia’s family will miss her incredibly. She will always be in our thoughts and hearts and we will always carry her with us.
Thank you and God Bless.
Visitation for Cecilia will be held at McKersie & Early Funeral Home, 114 Main St. E., Milton, Ontario, on Friday, December 13, 2024 from 2 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm and 9 pm and again on Saturday, December 14, 2024 from 2 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm and 9 pm.
