The family sadly announces the unexpected peaceful passing of their beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, Cecelia Marie Van Laeken on Wednesday January 1, 2025, at Caressant Care, Courtland, in her 95th year. Predeceased by her loving husband Gilbert (2019). Loving and strong mother to Marie (Bob) Lester, Brenda Van Quaethem (Friend Ben De Cloet), Yvette (Dave Wheeler) and son Maurice Van Laeken.
Also survived by 10 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Survived by sister-in-law Margaret Van Laeken. Aunt to several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Constant and Madelein Vuylsteke, daughter-in-law Lorraine Van Laeken (1991), two son-in-laws Marcel Vankerrebroeck (1992) and Steve Van Quaethem (2014), sister Margaret (Michel) Pieters, brothers Roger (Paula) Vuylsteke and Ralph (Vivian) Vuylsteke and brother-in-law Walter Van Laeken.
Cecelia was hard working, she worked alongside her husband for many years growing tobacco, dedicating her life to creating a warm, nurturing and supporting home for her children and their families as well as to many friends and neighbours. She had a spark to her, often described as a “fire cracker’ who was never afraid to speak her mind. She will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Friends and relatives will be received by Cecelia’s family on Tuesday January 7, 2025 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at Ostrander’s Funeral Home, 43 Bidwell Street, Tillsonburg, ON N4G 3T6 (519) 842-5221. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Tillsonburg on Wednesday January 8, 2025 at 11:00am with Father Seejo John presiding. A luncheon will immediately follow the service until 1:30pm. Private family interment will be held at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Langton. Memorial donations to Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital Foundation and Diabetes Canada would be appreciated by the Van Laeken family and can be done via cheque payable to the charity through Ostrander’s Funeral Home.
