Obituary of Carolyn « Joy » Hartlen
Carolyn Joy Hartlen
February 4th 1947 – March 19th 2025
Joy, aged 78, passed away peacefully on March 19 th , 2025 at the Halifax Infirmary. Joy was brave in her final choice and her last moments were spent sharing love with her children and grandchildren. Joy was the daughter of the late Fred & Doris Bishop (nee Spicer). She was survived by her sons Andrew (Christine), Rick (Jill) & Michael, and her grandchildren Ryan, Jeffrey, Ireland, Cate, Elizabeth, Nate & Alyssa. She was also survived by her sisters Beverly Janson (Fred) and Debbie King.
Joy was a believer who embodied the teaching that she could do all things through Christ who gave her strength. As such, she served in many positions at the Faith United Baptist Church in Sackville and faithfully worshipped at the Middleton Baptist Church in the Annapolis Valley.
Joy dedicated much of her life to serving the community and in her final years took great pride in volunteering with the Middleton and Area Fireflies, the ladies auxiliary to the local fire department. In the earlier years of her family, she was active in the organization of the Sackville Winter Carnival and later helped form the Ardoise Winter Carnival. She served as President of the Board for the Ardoise Community Hall and was an active leader of youth through Beavers and the Boy Scouts (no one wore the title “Bubbles” better).
An enthusiastic sportsperson, she played slow-pitch softball with the Electric Orange team in the Sackville ladies league and was an ardent dart player. Her love for competitive sport was most on display as she heartily cheered on her boys through every sport they tried.
Professionally, Joy worked in the personnel department at CBC and later for the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union. Going back to school later in life to follow her passion, she became an accomplished hairstylist, opening her own shop – “Joy’s Crowning Glory” which she selflessly gave up to care for her much-loved brother, Frank Bishop, in his final months of life.
Aside from her progeny, Joy’s greatest source of pride was her green thumb. The front yard of her little house on the main street in Middleton would, at the height of summer, cause traffic congestion as motorists slowed to observe her carefully manicured garden and bountiful Wisteria shrubbery.
Joy’s family would like to thank the members of the Middleton community who accepted her into their hearts. We will always be grateful for the inspiration our amazing friend, Graham Long, gifted to our mother through his never-ending courage and strength of personality.
A family service will be held at a later date when Joy will be laid to rest with her mother and father at the Habitant Cemetery, Canning, Nova Scotia. Mom’s final wish was that anyone wishing to donate in her memory should do so to “Operation Smile” Make A Gift | Operation Smile Canada – Operation Smile Canada – Give a Child a SMILE or by calling 1-844-376-4530.
