It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Carol Anne Matheson, on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 75 years. She was loving wife, devoted mother and grandmother, dedicated teacher, and cherished friend. She was born in Loon Lake, Saskatchewan. She also lived in British Columbia where she met Barry; and then later settled in Calgary.
Carol’s journey began with a passion for education, which led her to the University of British Columbia where she trained to become an elementary school teacher. Her first teaching position took her to Prince George, British Columbia, where she began her career. After the birth of their first daughter, Carol and her husband, Barry made the move to Calgary, Alberta, where they settled and where Carol would continue to teach for the remainder of her distinguished career with the Calgary School Board. This is where her second daughter was born and the family was raised.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Carol had a gift for making those around her feel special. She was an exceptional baker, and her family always looked forward to the delicious cookies she made with love. She had a deep appreciation for nature and found joy in tending to her garden. Her love for flowers, particularly her lilac trees, brought her much happiness, and the beauty of her garden was a reflection of her nurturing spirit. Carol also had a passion for travel. Alongside Barry, she enjoyed exploring the world with their daughters, visiting places like Australia, Fiji, and the United States. Their retirement years were filled with adventures, including a memorable trip to China and Japan. These travels brought her family closer together and allowed Carol to experience the world in all its diversity and wonder.
In her later years, Carol faced the challenge of cancer with courage and determination. She fought fiercely through treatments, never losing her spirit or her will to live fully. Her strength throughout this battle was an inspiration to all who knew her. Carol’s warmth, generosity, and unwavering love will forever be remembered by her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, great baking, and a reminder to cherish the moments we have with our loved ones. Carol will be deeply missed, but her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and all who were touched by her gentle and loving presence.
Carol is survived by her children, Megan (Renzo) LeManne, Gillian (Jason) Hurst; grandchildren, Gabi and Katrina; brother, Bob Janzen; brother-in-law Dave (Joan) Matheson. She was predeceased by her husband Barry James Matheson (2014); brother, Roy Janzen.
