It is with heavy hearts that we announce the loss of our cherished father, and grandfather, Carl Reid. Carl was a man who was known by everyone, his welcoming nature and love for conversation brought joy to many. He was passionate about his community, always keeping up with local news, sharing stories, and making connections wherever he went. He leaves behind a legacy of generosity and friendship, one that will forever be remembered.
Carl Alfred Reid was born on June 16, 1949 and passed away on Friday, May 2, 2025, in palliative care at the Brockville General Hospital and was in his 76 th year.
Carl was predeceased by his parents, Ervin and Thelma (Kelly) Reid, his brother John Reid and his wife of 53 years Bonnie (Casselman) Reid, his in-laws Charlotte & Irwin Casselman, Ken McManaman, Norm & Gail Tennyson.
Carl is survived by his sons Wayne (Shirley), Shawn (Alicia), and his grandchildren Shauna, Aaron, and Harmon. His great grandchildren, Bailey and Addison, as well as his step grand-children Jaden and Shane and by his special niece Kelly Carmichael. Carl is also survived by his in-laws: Ruth Reid, Gloria McManaman, Judy & Tom Spencer, Debbie & Danny Casselman, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to Carl’s much-loved family, he will also be missed by his life- long friends around the euchre table, Roy, Jackie, Marlene, and Bev.
Carl was a man of warmth and wisdom, who made everyone feel welcome with his friendly smile and engaging conversations. Whether fishing, hunting, or cheering on his favourite hockey team, he embraced life with positivity and enthusiasm. Above all, he treasured his time with his sons and grandchildren, always encouraging them to chase their dreams and to do what makes them happy. His kindness and stories will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Carl was a lifelong sports enthusiast, he especially loved hockey, and cheering on his favourite teams with passion. For the most part, he never missed a game when his favourite teams were on. Whether watching from his living room or discussing plays over coffee at Tim Hortons, his passion for the sport was infectious. Hockey wasn’t just a game to him—it was a way to connect with people. He loved sharing stories about legendary plays, debating stats with friends, collecting and trading hockey cards, and passing on his love for the game to his sons and grandchildren. As a long-time hockey coach, Carl passed down not just his knowledge of hockey, but his infectious enthusiasm and unwavering dedication to the sport. He had a keen eye for talent, recognizing potential in players long before others did. Nothing brought him more joy than seeing athletes refine their skills, rise to the occasion, and achieve success—whether in local rinks or on grander stages. His passion for the game was more than just fandom; it was a deep appreciation for the discipline, camaraderie, and heart that make hockey special.
Carl embodied resilience, facing kidney cancer with unwavering courage. After years of dialysis, he was given the gift of renewed life through a transplant—an opportunity he embraced with gratitude. Free from the burdens of illness, he found joy in traveling, spending precious time with loved ones, and savouring the simple moments he had once missed. Even through his health struggles, his optimism never wavered, and he considered each day a blessing. His second chance allowed him to regain his independence and spend meaningful time with his family building lasting memories—a gift he never took for granted.
Carl always lived life to the fullest, and enjoyed every day. It was the simple things that made him happy, playing euchre with his close friends, watching sports, chatting with the guys at Tim Horton’s, and helping Bonnie with her flower gardens. Carl knew that every day was a gift, a belief that guided him through life’s challenges and triumphs. After facing illness and receiving a second chance through a kidney transplant, he embraced each moment with gratitude, never taking time with loved ones for granted. His unwavering kindness left a lasting imprint on those around him—through his sons and grandchildren, his generosity, wisdom, and compassion will continue to shine. Whether in quiet gestures, heartfelt conversations, or the simple joy of sharing stories over coffee, his legacy of love and warmth will live on, woven into the fabric of their lives.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to all the friends and loved ones who visited Carl during his time in the hospital and the palliative care unit. Your kindness, support, and presence brought him comfort and meant the world to us. A special thank you to Tom and Judy for their unwavering support, compassion, and strength—we are forever grateful for the way you helped us navigate this journey.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at the Irvine Memorial Chapel at Roselawn, 2451 County Road 15, Maitland, Ontario on Friday, May 9, 2025 from noon until 2 p.m. when a service to celebrate Carl’s life will be held in the chapel.
