Obituary of Calogero Maltese
MALTESE, Calogero (Carlo) – Peacefully passed away with his loving family by his side on Sunday, March 16, 2025 at the Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital at the age of 84. Beloved husband of Concettina (Connie) for 54 years. Son of the late Rosalia Maltese (nee Fontana) and Rosario Maltese and son-in-law of the late Angela (nee Daniele) and the late Nunzio Daniele. Loving father of Rosalie (Aniello) Rescigno and Angela Maltese (Joe Nagy). Proud Nonno of Enrico, Carlo, and Luca Rescigno, and Fernanda and Tina Rosenboom. He will be sadly missed by his many nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and colleagues. Carlo was predeceased by his sisters Vita ( the late Nicola) Fasulo, Lina (the late Andrea) Accardo, Francesca Maltese, and his brother Pietro Maltese. Lovingly remembered by his sister-in-law Antonina.
Carlo was a man of quiet strength and boundless generosity, whose legacy remains woven into the lives he touched. Born in Salaparuta, Sicily, he came from humble beginnings, his dreams shaped as much by circumstance as by determination. Though the path he had envisioned at the time was beyond his family’s reach, he embraced education and became a teacher in Castelvetrano before courageously setting out to forge a new life in Canada. In 1966, Carlo immigrated to Dundas, Ontario; he taught the Italian language at Cathedral High School for Girls in Hamilton. Soon thereafter, Carlo sought a more fulfilling path and moved to St. Catharines, Ontario, learning English in 1968, and beginning a career in real estate by 1969. With resilience and ambition, he built a life rooted in hard work and love. In the years that followed, the Welland Avenue Car Wash was born; a modest beginning that blossomed into a lifetime of entrepreneurship and community building.
A man of deep wisdom and unwavering integrity, Carlo found solace in the simple joys of life: whether tending to his garden, revisiting the literature he poured over in his younger years, or sharing stories from the land he once called home.
Carlo’s presence was a gift to all who knew him Carlo’s contributions to the Niagara Region real estate landscape as a landlord, property owner, and philanthropist were deeply personal; he believed in the power of home, in the dignity of hard work, and in the importance of lifting others up. Never seeking recognition, his efforts left an indelible mark on those around him, setting a standard of excellence for those who hope to follow in his footsteps.
Carlo hung the sun, the moon, and the stars for his loved ones; he leaves behind a family who adored him, a community forever shaped by his magnanimity, and a legacy that will endure far beyond his years. Though his earthly presence is now still, his spirit echoes in every sacrifice he made, in the selfless acts that spoke the words he never needed to say, and in the many lives he shaped.
The family will receive friends on Friday, March 21st at the George Darte Funeral Home & Cremation Centre, 585 Carlton St., from 2-4 and 6-8pm. Vigil prayers at 3pm. Funeral Mass on Saturday, March 22nd at St. Alfred Roman Catholic Church, 272 Vine St at 10am. Entombment Victoria Lawn Cemetery
In lieu of flowers donations made in Carlo’s memory to Hotel Dieu Shaver would be appreciated by his family.
