With broken hearts and profound sadness, the family announces the passing of Michael (Mike) Simon Callahan on March 4 th , 2025 at 85 years of age.
Born in the cold of winter in a cabin in the woods at Bush Camp Diamond Lake, Poppa was destined to have a love for the great outdoors and he passed that on to many of his children and grandchildren. Poppa drew his last breath at Kirkland and District Hospital in Kirkland Lake, Ontario in the early hours of the morning, with dedicated nursing staff holding his hand. Our sister, Maggie, was at his side every day and was a force to be reckoned with, ensuring he had superior quality of care and advocating for him on behalf of our entire family.
Mike suffered many losses during his lifetime and each one left a huge hole in his heart. He was predeceased by the love of his life and the most amazing woman, Carolyn – wife of 53 years (2022). “Nanny” gathered the many branches of our family together and embraced the importance of a blended family. Mike was also predeceased by his Father – John Callahan (1957); Mother – Clementine Ede (2020); Step Father – Frederick Ede (2007); Sister – Aline Wilson (2012) and most recently, his daughter – Linda (Dewey) Callahan (2025). As a loving uncle, Mike cried many tears for nieces and nephews who left this world much too young.
Mike is survived by his children: Judith Callahan; Shelley Sakula (Mark); Linda Farrugia (Carmelo); Brenda Benford; Michael Morin (Marnie); Margaret (Maggie) James (Gary Bert); Derek Callahan (Toni); Holly Cannon (Jerry); and Randy Hill (Angela). He also leaves behind his brothers – Ken Callahan (Donna) and Leonard Callahan (Michelle); brother in law, Dennis West (Priscilla) and a very special niece – Aline (Pee Wee) Wilson Goyer.
Mike’s grandchildren – Jessica Greening, Andrew Callahan, Casey James and Madison Cannon will miss their visits with Poppa and his wise advice. He taught them many life skills and they are all strong, resilient adults because of his teachings. He was not always easy on his grandchildren but they each have treasured memories and will always carry him in their hearts. Mike also had an additional 18 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren. Our family commits to sharing stories about Poppa so that his legacy lives on in the hearts of this generation and future generations.
Dad’s career took many paths – long haul transport driver, Adams Mine and lastly as owner of Beaver Hill Bait Shop in Chaput Hughes. Many stories were shared between Ma, Dad and customers in that popular dwelling. Dad’s rod, reel and bait collection surpassed no other in the province and his knowledge of fishing and hunting spots throughout the north was sought after by many an avid outdoorsman. His secret spots were passed on to very few people – but many family members have retraced their steps to find them.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be held in his honour at our family’s favourite camping spot, on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
