Burton James Toner
1943-2025
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Burton James
Toner of Harvey, NB, a loved husband, father, grandfather,
great-grandfather and friend, who passed away peacefully on March
13th, 2025 at the age of 81. Born and raised in Harvey Station, NB,
Burton lived his entire life on the family farm, a place where he
found both work and comfort. He treasured his farm and loved looking
out over the freshly cut fields in late summer.
A true family man, Burton cherished his wife, Margaret L. Toner, of 50
years, until her passing, his two daughters, his son-in-law,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren above all else. His love for his
family was immeasurable, and his kind heart touched everyone who had
the privilege of knowing him.
Burton had a lifelong passion for farming and spent many years behind
the wheel as a tractor-trailer driver. He loved the open road so much
that he retired, only to return to work and retire again – an example
of his dedication and love for life. His nickname,
“Smiley,” was earned through his bright, social nature. He
was known for his friendly personality, his love for gatherings, and
his enjoyment of dances with friends.
Whether on the farm, behind the wheel of his truck, or among loved
ones, Burton lived life to the fullest. When he wasn’t on the
road, he found joy in working his herd of beef cattle and had a deep
love for horses. He especially enjoyed attending horse pulls, a
passion that brought him great happiness over the years.
Burton leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and kindness. Though
he will be deeply missed, we take comfort knowing that he is no longer
in pain and is now reunited with the love of his life.
Burton is survived by his two daughters, Barb McCullough and Bev Wood
(Andrew); grandchildren, Candace Fawkes (Chris), Gabriel McCullough,
Jacob Wood (Courtney), Weston Wood (Courtney); great-grandchildren,
Landon, William and Leni; step-grandsons Dan (Ashley) and Dave
(Natalie) McCullough and their children Cameron, James, Archer and
Beau; sisters Margaret Nason and Sylvia Morehouse; brothers Alex
Harris (Dorothy) and Dwayne Harris (Rhonda); sister-in-law Debbie
Harris; brothers-in-law, Larry McKay (Moria), David McKay (Sharon) and
Trevor McKay; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews,
great-great nieces and great-great nephews, and a large circle of
friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Along with his beloved wife, Margaret, Burton is predeceased by his
parents, Arthur and Alice Harris; his parents-in-law, Neill and Helen
McKay; son-in-law Brad McCullough; uncle and aunt Gordon and Letty
Toner; brother Billy Harris; brothers-in-law Stephen Morehouse,
Francis Nason and Brian McKay.
At Burton’s request there will be no funeral or visitation. His
ashes will be laid to rest at the Acton Cemetery at a later date.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the wonderful care
that Burton received during his last few months from the ladies at the
Harvey Outreach program and through the Extra-Mural program. In lieu
of flowers, donations are asked to be made to either of these valuable
programs.
