Obituary of Bruce Bracken
George Bruce BRACKEN
We are profoundly sad to announce that Bruce passed away April 9, 2025, age 93, peacefully, at Carveth Care Centre in Gananoque, ON. He was a devoted husband to Nancy Joan (nee Row), his childhood sweetheart, who predeceased him May 15, 2014, and with whom he shared so much during their 60-year marriage. Together they raised five children of whom they were very proud. He leaves behind Karen Jardim (Brian), Waterloo, Jim (Deb), Brockville, Sue Avery (Bob), Charleston Lake, Jane Loomis (James), Brockville and Craig, Brockville. Loving grandfather to 11 grandchildren: Chad (Amanda), Justin, Megan (Alice), Jessica (Sal), Carly, Shone, Robyn, Kody, Senna, Cooper and Jacob and nine great-grandchildren: Thain, William, Jacob, Henry, Adelina, Myla, Lia, Michela and Millie.
Born in Athens, ON, on January 1, 1932, Bruce was the youngest of six children of the late Dr Clifford and Florence (nee Willson) Bracken of Brockville. At age five he moved to Brockville where he spent his life. He is predeceased by his parents, brothers Clifford and Lawrence and sisters Ruth and Helen, daughter-in-law Marilynn, survived by sister Connie and many nieces and nephews.
Bruce graduated from Queen’s University, Kingston in 1956 with a BA and BPHE. His love of sports led to a life-long and dedicated career in coaching and education. He taught Mathematics and Physical Education at Brockville Collegiate Institute and Thousand Islands Secondary School where he also coached football for several years. He later served as Vice Principal at both high schools and retired from South Grenville Secondary School in 1990.
All his life, he loved spending time on the river, one of his favourite places being the lovely Victorian family cottage at Fernbank. He was most content canoeing, kayaking and sailing and kept all three in ship-shape. He and Nancy were active members of the Brockville Yacht Club and spent many memorable hours on his beloved sailboat “After Five” sailing through the beautiful Thousand Islands which he knew like the back of his hand and thought was the best place on earth. They enjoyed meeting fellow sailors and had stories to tell of sudden summer storms and close encounters with shoals. In retirement, Bruce and Nancy enjoyed travelling to Fort Myers and St Maarten with dear friends and had great fun on Caribbean cruises. After raising five children it was a pleasure to see them enjoy these travels. A keen believer in fitness, he and Nancy skied — downhill when the family was young, and later cross-country. He so loved nature and the outdoors, it wasn’t unheard of for Bruce to organize a winter picnic in the snow, though the family was not quite as keen on this. He loved the many gatherings that large extended families often organize and was known to recite more than a few limericks over the years to the moans, groans and laughter of his family. As a long-time member of the Brockville Country Club, he continued to golf and curl into his 80s. He was a loyal fan of the Queen’s Golden Gaels and enjoyed going to the games in Kingston. A life-long music aficionado he passed on his love for classical and jazz music to his children. Bruce loved to keep busy, took pride in his home and spent many hours maintaining his lawn and gardens. He enjoyed projects and for most of his life always had something on the go. He was also Involved in the community for much of his life and in years past enjoyed volunteering at the Volunteer Bureau.
Over the past few years dementia took it’s toll but Bruce remained fiercely independent, incredibly uncomplaining, unfailingly optimistic and genuinely appreciative of everything his loving family did for him. At the end he knew he was surrounded by love.
Bruce leaves a strong legacy to his children who have been influenced by his strong character and values and he would continue to encourage the cherished laughter and dreams of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will always be with us and deeply missed.
The family is grateful for the professional and compassionate care provided by the staff at Carveth Care Centre in Gananoque.
Cremation has taken place and the family will receive family and friends at a Celebration of Life at the Barclay Funeral Home, 137 Pearl Street East Brockville on Saturday April 26, 2025, 12-2 followed by a service and refreshments. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate a donation to the Bruce Bracken Memorial Scholarship Fund by way of the Brockville and Area Community Foundation (www.yourcommunityfoundation.ca/donate) or BGH Palliative Care.
