Beverly was known by the many who loved her for her quick wit, strong will, and astounding resiliency. She was also enormously generous and cared deeply for all those around her. While her family was the centre of her world, Bev viewed family in the most expansive way. She fed (and sometimes housed) generations of young ones. Together with her late husband, Eric Kokish, she opened their home to many of their kids’ and grandkids’ respective friends and dear ones, over so many decades, nurturing all with an abundance of food, music, laughter, and quirky banter.
Born in Montreal and raised by parents, Jack Kraft and Mary Kraft (nee Foreman), Bev’s strong convictions came through from a young age. In high school in the late 1950s, she petitioned to be among the first cohort of girls to be allowed to take advanced sciences instead of Latin. She maintained her strong sense of justice and steadfast determination throughout her life, even in times of uncertainty and challenge.
Bev met Eric, her lifelong confidante and future husband, in high school, and they later journeyed through more than four decades of together – first in Montreal, then in Toronto, and finally in Peterborough. In their early years, Bev ran and later took over her father’s garment business. Later, she helped turn her and Eric’s mutual passion, bridge, into an acclaimed joint-career in international coaching and consulting. Both already World Champions at the time, Bev joined forces with Eric in the early 1990s to launch their business, including writing convention systems, preparing materials, and travelling to every continent to teach the world’s top teams. She brought not only intellectual prowess to this work, but also a remarkable sense of adventure, astute organizational skills, and unwavering integrity.
For someone as adventurous as Bev, she was truly always happiest at home. She loved a good strong cup of tea, snuggling her dog, sharing a meal with family, the awe of spring flowers, books, puzzles, the family’s many animals (ducks, cats, dogs and horses), her grandkids’ endless theatrics, and the tender daily moments with her son who lived with her. In her final years, these simple things became her whole world.
Bev died peacefully with her family around her. She will be missed always by her children, Elyse Chazan (Martin Vanderwoude), Lori Hurwitz (Benyamin Hurwitz), Mayera Chazan (Ben Hodson), and Matthew Kraft-Kokish. She was an incredible grandmother to Franki Ikeman (Thomas Surian), Andrew Ikeman, Eliana Goldstein (Yoni), Yaakov Shalom Goldstein (Sarah Malka), Dinah Spero (Shmuly), Anthony Hodson, and Alexandra Hodson. She was also dearly looking forward to meeting her brand new great-granddaughters, Rochel Spero and Chana’le Goldstein. Charly, her pampered poodle, remained her most trusted companion right up until her final days.
The family extends deep thanks to Bev’s doctor, Becca Webster, and the whole community palliative care team in Peterborough, for the most compassionate and attentive care over the past year.
We will update this page in the coming weeks with details of how we will gather to pay tribute to Bev.
