Born to her father Stanley and her mother Shirley (predeceased) on August 4th, 1951 – Beverley Ann Diehl arrived the same year in Stratford, Ontario that Princess Elizabeth – soon to be Queen Elizabeth – visited the town in October. The Princess’ arrival was fittingly symbolic because Bev was graced with Elizabeth’s common decency and lifelong goodwill toward others. Of all the places she lived, however, it was her adopted hometown of Sundridge that Bev loved the most. As a single mother with health challenges, she faced these difficulties with a strong will and, in doing so, she found support, resilience, and energy in her loving community of Sundridge. She settled there in 1980 and never left, raising her three daughters, Jennifer, Jodi, and Erin. An assortment of pets – Kitty, Bart, Fozzie, Spooky, and Nova – a pair of peripatetic snakes – also came and went, adding colour to the family’s life.
Jobs at Caswell Resort, IGA, Municipal Office, Lions Building, help lines, cleaning, and at a thrift store, gave her the opportunity to support her family and establish cherished friendships. The cultural fabric of Sundridge, including the annual Fall Fair, smelt run, the Wild Game dinner, and the Sunflower Festival, were occasions of meaning and joy for Bev. She also enjoyed many small pleasures, such as chit-chatting on the phone, making preserves, preparing culinary delights to share with others and mastering crosswords. Bev will be dearly missed by her father Stanley, her sister Michelle (Wray), brothers Ron (Susan), Barry (Norma) and Dave (Julie). She leaves behind her three daughters and their husbands, Jennifer and Peter, Jodi and David and Erin and Michael. Her six grandchildren were her true pride. She enjoyed and fostered each of the distinct personalities and interests of Ian, Samantha, Julia, Elliot, Gavin and Andy. They will miss their Grandmother greatly. Bev also leaves behind her many nieces and nephews and many close friends.
The family will receive visitors at the Opatovsky Funeral Home-Moore Chapel, 9 Paget Street in Sundridge on Saturday March 15, 2025, from 2 to 4 pm.
A private service to celebrate Bev’s life will be held later.
Cremation has taken place. Memorial donations in Bev’s honour to the Algonquin Grace Hospice would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Hospice Huntsville for the caring and compassionate support shown to Bev.
