Obituary for Bernard Scrivener (1938 – 2025)
Bernard (Bern) was a warm, adventurous, bold, and loving man, who cared deeply for his family and friends. He valued craftsmanship, quality and had the best sense of style. He always greeted you with the biggest smile and enthusiastic « hello,” making you feel welcome in his presence.
Bern was a wonderful conversationalist and storyteller. He took an interest in others and was always willing to share stories of his own. With a keen interest in history and reading Bern was a lifelong learner and his sense of curiosity never ceased to impress. Bern loved life – and lived his to the fullest. Wherever he is now, we’re certain he’s casting his fly off into the lake, walking a trail in the woods, or paddling his green cedar canvas canoe.
Born in 1938, Bern grew up in Winnipeg, where his summers were spent fishing at Falcon Lake, a place where he developed a deep appreciation for nature. After beginning his career with Eaton’s in Winnipeg, Bernard’s professional journey took him to Burlington, where he and his wife, Elaine, co-founded Scrivener’s Men’s Apparel, a business that represented fashion leadership for over three decades.
Bernard’s career as an entrepreneur was marked by a strong work ethic, and he was brought great fulfillment through the friendships he built in his community. He volunteered with Ducks Unlimited, the Art Gallery of Burlington Foundation, Burlington Economic Development, Downtown Burlington, was on the Steering Committee for Performing Arts Burlington, and served as President of the Rotary Club of Burlington Central.
The love of Bern’s life and his kindred spirit was his wife of 62 years, Elaine. Together, they raised a family, operated a business and shared their dreams. He travelled to the Arctic, Labrador, and took countless trips to the Prairies. They paddled the waters of Lake Superior, Hood River, the Arctic Coast, and canoe routes of Algonquin Park, adding to their logbook of extraordinary experiences.
In 1999, Bern and Elaine purchased a log cabin near Algonquin Park which would become a huge part of Bern’s life – his happy place! Bernard spent many a weekend refurbishing the cabin and building a bunkie « The Treetops » for his granddaughters. In quiet moments you would find Bern tying flies, casting off the dock, or setting off in the canoe.
Bern was predeceased by his daughter, Monica and brother Harvey. He is survived by Elaine, daughter Yvette, son-in-law Allan Barnfield, granddaughters Laine and Jae Barnfield, sister-in-law Carole, nephews
Glen (sons Sloane and Tryston) and Colin (son Chase), niece Kate and Rich (Wong) and Hudson and Ashleigh, and nieces Monique and Michelle James (Jorges), Maya and Marina. His legacy of love, loyalty,
and adventure lives on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Paddles up, Bern. You will be deeply missed.
