Dad was born July 28, 1938, in Saskatoon, SK. to Bernard and Sarah (Niessen) Penner.
He grew up on a farm with his parents and only sister Edna, attending Penner School until grade seven, speaking only German. Farming at this age became his passion more than school.
At the age of sixteen, he started working at the University of Saskatchewan, always bragging he had sixteen years of university, even though it was in maintenance. It was here that he earned the nickname “Gentle Ben”. At this time, he roomed together with John Siemens and Albert Unger. During this time, he met Mom, Betty Graber in a “coma” he always said, which was a pantry. He heard her last name was Graber, which he took as a grabber and said that was exactly what he did!
They married October 22, 1960, sharing 64 years of marriage. Farming was his passion along with restoring tractors and collecting toy cars. He had a room in their home filled from floor to ceiling. Dad was also in many parades, proudly showing off his Model T.
Dad’s faith and love for his home church were served at Martensville Mission Church as an usher, deacon, and Gideon for 40 years. He loved supporting missionaries, also being able to go on two mission trips. One to Haiti and another to Mexico. These were such a highlight for him.
Mom and Dad moved off the farm in 2010, due to Dad’s start of dementia. They were able to live in a home in Warman for ten years before Dad’s health with dementia declined.
Dad and Mom were blessed with six children. One boy and five girls: Mervin (Val) Penner; Shirley (Lloyd) Wiebe; Dianne (Trev) Beherns; Elaine (Joe) Wiebe; Phyllis (Ed) Wiebe; and Karen (Jason) Carlton.
Dad was very proud of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Merv and Val’s children Lyndon, Jamey (Tom Fehr), and Kim (Danny) Peters. Shirley and Lloyd’s daughter Lynsey (Matt) Murdock. Dianne and Trev’s daughters Melissa (Jesse) Addis, and Michelle (Connor) Schick. Elaine and Joe’s sons Dylan (Amber) Wiebe, Destan Wiebe (Paige and Presley), and Devan Wiebe. Phyllis and Ed’s sons Jayden Wiebe and Brenden (Stacey) Wiebe. Karen and Jason’s son Rylan Penner (Shayla).
Great-grandchildren Reidyn & Lily Fehr; Kobe, Ashdon & Lebron Peters; Jaxxson & Brixton Addis; Ben, Elliott, Owen & Claire Schick; Kylar & Kayden Wiebe; and another great-grandson due in March.
Dad was predeceased by his parents Ben and Sarah (Niessen) Penner; sister Edna and her husband Herman Hamm; in-laws Alvin and Eva Graber, Jake and Irene Siemens, Art and Marlene Graber; and mother-in-law Martha Lemke.
