Benny died as a result of severe injuries he received while working on his Sherwood Park acreage. Although we are saddened by his passing, his great spirit and love of life live on within the lives of those he touched. We also have peace of mind, knowing at 93, he died with his boots on!
Benny started his young life in the Calder District, in Edmonton, selling red apples to the Americans and delivering newspapers and magazines to make ends meet during the late dirty thirties.
Benny was a proud graduate of St. Josephs’ High School. After his father left the family, being the oldest, he felt it was his responsibility to care for his mother and brother. He worked at many intense labouring jobs until his ‘dream job’ came along – The Edmonton Fire Department. He dedicated himself to his family and to the service of protecting others as a firefighter for 35 years, retiring as a District Chief.
The friendships made on the job would last a lifetime. Therefore, Benny was very instrumental in forming the ‘Retirees Brigade’. This organization gave the retired firefighters the opportunity to interact with each other through meetings and many social functions.
Benny was a workaholic. He and his buddies formed the KKK Boys (Katholic Koncrete Kompany). These fellows on days off built houses, garages, did renovations and poured miles of concrete.
He was very proud of his acreage and his community, East Whitecroft, in the County of Strathcona. Benny dedicated many hours maintaining the hall and organizing community functions.
Benny loved fishing. In his younger years, he and his friends would travel to Campbell River to salmon fish. The last few years saw him travelling up to the ‘Daly Boys’ place on Lesser Slave Lake. He had just returned from fishing there before he passed away. Benny had a great love of sports. He held season tickets for the Oilers and Oil Kings and still had his tickets for the Elks. He thoroughly enjoyed playing hockey in his younger days, but more importantly, it was playing ‘old time hockey’. He spent many hours of his life playing hockey in many places. Benny participated in the first hockey tournament played in Honolulu, Hawaii. However, his favorite hockey tournament was the ‘Charlie Schultz’s Snoopy Tournament’ in Santa Rosa, California. He would stack his team with the best players he could find in Alberta. His teams did exceptionally well. It gave him great satisfaction to defeat any American or Eastern Canadian team! Benny hung up his skates in his early 80’s.
Benny is survived by his wife, Annette; sister, Alice; sons, Darryl (Carol), Donald; Annette’s children, Kim and Mike (Holly); grandchildren, Jordan (Jan), Darcie (Cam), Braden (MacKenzie), Jed (Ripley), Ben, Tyler (Ashley), Emily (Owen); and great grandchildren, Lark, Maeve, and Ione.
Benny was predeceased by his parents, Benjamin and Marie; infant sister; brother, Reverend Don Stein; son, Maury; and son-in-law, Ken.
Benny had great faith. We as a family, are grateful that Reverend Jim Corrigan will celebrate his Funeral Mass on Friday, July 25, 2025, 10:30 a.m., at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church, 13 Brower Drive, Sherwood Park. Mass will be live streamed.
We wish to express our gratitude to the EMS, Strathcona Fire Department, U of A Emergency and the Trauma 3F2 wards for their compassion and care of Benny and each one of us.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Donations may be made to the Strathcona Food Bank, Firefighters Burn Treatment Society, Edmonton Chapter, Suite 1, 7024 – 101 Avenue NW, Edmonton, AB, T6A 0H7, or to a charity of choice.
As Benny would say, ‘When life lets you down, have a Life Saver’.
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley Downtown Funeral Home.
