Barrie Keller Ballantyne
Barrie Keller Ballantyne was born on December 29, 1945, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, to Frank and Elsie Ballantyne (née Van Den Ham). He was the fifth of six brothers-Sarge, Stew, Fred, Bill, Barrie, and Dave-who ruled (or perhaps terrorized) the East Flat of Prince Albert, particularly the 600 block of 6th Street East. Barrie’s childhood was filled with fond memories: fishing for gold eye at the forks, playing hockey with a fresh « puck » from the milk wagon, and always finding time to fix cars. He also played a pivotal role in the Ballantyne Boys’ paper route dynasty, even training his younger brother to take over the family business.
While in high school, Barrie met Lynda Fox, and the two began a love story that would span their lifetimes. Their early plans for the future briefly took them in different directions: Lynda attending nursing school and Barrie heading to California to work with his brother Sarge. After an adventurous week in California where the boys really took the bull by the horns, Barrie returned to Prince Albert to be with Lynda, and the two were married on September 16, 1967.
Barrie and Lynda settled down to build their dream home on an acreage northeast of Prince Albert. It started with a small house, but Barrie’s resourcefulness quickly turned it into a « work in progress. » He salvaged bricks from the closing Burns plant, which he meticulously chipped the concrete off to repurpose. Their family grew, with daughter Sha-Lyn, followed by Krista, and then son Mark. And though Barrie was always working on something, he found plenty of time to pass down his wisdom-and a few misadventures-to his children.
Barrie had a special place in his heart for animals. Over the years, he and Lynda raised and showed boxers, kept horses, and loved having cats and dogs around-though, it should be noted, no rabbits! Barrie had a remarkable talent for fixing anything-cars, bikes, houses, and even hearts. His knowledge of vintage cars was vast, and he could identify a make, model, and year with just a glance. Throughout his life, Barrie owned a variety of unique vehicles, but his treasure was his beloved black 1961 Triumph TR3A.
Barrie’s favorite place was the cabin on Sunset Bay at Emma Lake. There, he enjoyed music filled evenings watching sunsets with a cold rum and coke, often puttering around the yard-raking the beach, touching up the paint, or chatting with neighbors. When the work was done, Barrie would go fishing for supper (hoping to reel in a pickerel), feeding the ducks, riding his E-bike or taking Lynda in the golf cart for ice cream. The cabin was more than just a retreat-it was the heart of the family. It was the place where everyone gathered, where memories were made, and where Barrie’s heart was happiest when his loved ones were close by.
Barrie passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Elsie, as well as his brothers, Sarge, Stewart, and Bill. He is survived by his beloved wife, Lynda; his three children, Sha-Lyn (Mark), Krista (Randy), and Mark (Angela); and his cherished grandchildren, Paige, Kyler, Jessica, and Ethan. Barrie is also survived by his brothers, Fred (Anne) and David (Lianne), along with numerous nieces and nephews. A special mention goes to his loyal furry companion, Gabby, who brought him much joy.
A private service will be held at a later date. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the ALS Society; the care team from Saskatoon Home Care as well as to Deirdre, his occupational therapist, for the compassionate care shared with Barrie and the family during his journey with ALS.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the ALS Society of Canada or your local SPCA.
« How lucky we are to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. »
