Barbara Elizabeth Sibbald (née Chatland) passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Avalon Care Centre. She was born on December 26, 1940, to Albert Chatland (2010) and Marion Vingoe (1969). Though she lost her mother too soon, Barb found a cherished bond and friendship with her stepmother, Marjorie Nickel (2018). She adored her younger brother, Michael Chatland (2010) and his wife Maureen, as well as her many cousins, her in-laws and their families. Barb endured the heartbreaking loss of her son Sean in 2003 and her beloved husband Jack in 2018. Now reunited with those she deeply loved, she leaves behind a legacy of warmth, kindness, and unwavering love.
Barb grew up in Waterdown and Burlington, where her fun-loving and people-oriented nature flourished. She carried that passion for connection throughout her life. After graduating from nursing school in 1961, she formed lifelong friendships with her classmates—strong, intelligent women who dedicated their lives to caring for others. These friendships remained steadfast over the years, as did many others from high school, work, and the various places she called home, including Hamilton, Brampton, Orangeville, Florida, the farm, and the lake.
Barb met Jack while working as his nurse in the hospital. From that moment on, she cared for her best friend and partner in life. They were married on April 19, 1962, in the chapel at McMaster University and shared 56 wonderful years together. Their love was a testament to partnership and commitment.
In 1967, they welcomed their daughter Susan, followed by their son Sean in 1970. Barb was a devoted mother not only to them but also to many others who considered her their second mom. Her love knew no bounds. She had a way of making everyone feel special. Susan married Paul in 1997, and he became another son to Barb and one of her favorite people.
The loss of Sean in 2003 shattered Barb’s heart. He was her perfect baby boy who grew into a charming and fun-loving man. With remarkable grace and strength, she carried on while supporting Jack through his own grief.
Barb loved to entertain—her home was always filled with laughter, music, and delicious meals shared around the table. Whether at the house, the farm, or the cottage, guests were welcomed with open arms and left feeling loved.
Her greatest joy was her family. She adored her grandsons Jackson and Carson and took immense pride in their lives. Carson’s partner Karsyn became part of that love as well. Her great-grandchildren Kaydence and Westyn brought renewed joy into her life after Jack’s passing.
Barb’s kindness extended beyond family; she made everyone feel valued and cherished. She taught those around her to be good and kind but also to embrace life’s joys fully.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all who kept in touch with Barb through visits, cards and messages. Your efforts meant everything.
Deep gratitude is also extended to the compassionate staff of the Mariposa unit at Avalon Care Centre. Their kindness ensured that even in her final days, Barb remained herself—right down to the daily application of her signature lipstick. Thank you for doing that for her.
Dementia is a cruel disease that steals memories and independence. In honor of Barb’s journey, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada would be greatly appreciated.

« Love doesn’t die,
People do.
So, when all that’s left of me
Is love,
Give me away. »
May Barb’s memory continue to bring comfort and joy to all who knew her.
As per her wishes, Barbara has been cremated and interment will take place in the spring at Boston Mills Cemetery. Details of a celebration of life will follow at a later date.
A tree will be planted in memory of Barbara in the Dods & McNair Memorial Forest at the Island Lake Conservation Area, Orangeville.
