Barbara Jean Johnson (nee Nairne), also known as Babs to her family and friends, was born on February 10, 1941 in Brandon Manitoba to Margaret Grace (nee McFarlin) and Alfred Walter Nairne.
At the age of 6 she moved with her family to Winnipeg. She attended Somerset School, Hugh John Macdonald and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate where she finished 11th grade.
She worked her first jobs as a clerk at Mumford Medland and then as a switchboard operator at Bridge and Tank Western.
Barbara met John when he was working on a car in a garage with his friend Andy. They later connected at the old Eaton’s cafe. Their first date was at a drive in movie. She married John in 1960 when she was 19 years old.
Her family started soon after with Bruce arriving in 1961 and Sharon in 1963.
She lived in Winnipeg for most of her life except for three short years in Moncton, New Brunswick. After returning to Winnipeg, she worked at Quinton’s Cleaners and then part time at Eaton’s Catalogue until they closed. When her kids were older she worked as a data entry clerk at the Winnipeg Taxation Centre for 30 seasons.
She became a grandmother in 1988 with the arrival of Jared and then two more grandsons followed, Kyle and Marc . In 2018, she became widowed when she lost her husband John. In 2022, she became a great grandmother, also known as GiGi, with the arrival of Lana and then 3 great grandsons since then, Henry, Declan and Charlie.
She had many passions including photography and she even had some of her photos published in the Winnipeg by Winnipeg book including the front cover of the first edition. Other pictures, taken of her dog Misty, were published in the Winnipeg Humane Society calendar including on one year’s front cover. She also enjoyed petit point until her eyes couldn’t do it anymore, music from the 50’s, watching TV, flowers in her garden, feeding the birds, squirrels and deer, perfect weather, walking in the fog, rainbows, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the many animals that she has had as pets throughout her life time. She loved to take her dogs for long walks on a daily basis. She enjoyed taking them to Little Mountain Park where she would get to know many of the other dog lovers. She had two of her dogs, Misty and Sheena, in agility and won lots of ribbons. She enjoyed watching her regular TV programs, doing puzzles and Sudoku. She also had quite the sweet tooth and enjoyed anything chocolate. She loved getting to know anyone and would strike up a conversation and know a person’s life story in a matter of minutes. She was a natural at neighborhood watch and knew more about her neighbors than they probably knew about themselves.
Barbara always tried to be healthy. She watched her weight, exercised regularly and was active. She was active right until she couldn’t be any more. When she broke her arm in late November she was on her way for yet another walk with her Brandi. No one had any idea how sick she was at that time. She bravely faced what was before her and showed no true fear. For the most part she accepted her fate and only shed a few tears. She stayed in her home as long as she could with help. When it was no longer safe for her to do so, she spent her final two weeks at the palliative care unit at Riverview Health Centre. There she was kept comfortable and was well cared for by the compassionate staff. She loved the many phone calls, visits, flowers and treats that were brought in by her family and friends. Barbara passed away peacefully on February 22, 2025 surrounded by family. She was predeceased by her husband John. She leaves behind her son Bruce (Maria), daughter Sharon (Vernon), grandchildren Jared, Kyle (Carly), Marc (Alyssa) and great grandchildren Lana, Henry, Declan, and Charlie, her sister Marion and brother Bill (Brigitte) and many nieces and nephews.
Barbara had requested that if anyone would like to make a donation to any pet rescue or a charity of their choice in her name she would be honored. She also said to “hug someone everyday.”
