Dad began his life in St. Boniface, Winnipeg, Manitoba. He was born the second son to Alderman Jules Pynoo and wife Zoe Pynoo. His childhood was full of adventure and he enjoyed many interesting experiences throughout his youth.
As a young man, Dad was proud to help form the Pynoo Construction Company with his father, Jules and his late brother Dan. He loved to work with wood and mastered his carpentry skills while building his first home on 580 Prosper St. Dad shared this home with his first wife Joyce and his four children, Carol, Dawn, Art Jr. and Mike.
After building his first home he decided to design and build his own furniture as well. Work continued with his father, Jules, and in the early 1950s the pair built a cabin in a beautiful location at Eleanor Lake. Grampa Jules enjoyed fishing for Sturgeon and would also ride his bike to Seven Sisters.
While spending time at the lake, Dad and good friend Albert Cheys, decided to build several boats. By the time they were done, the family had a sailboat, runabout and a wonderful houseboat. This provided the family, especially his children, countless hours of fun on the lake. So many cherished memories were created at the Eleanor Lake cabin. It was the idyllic place to spend the summers. Dad went on to race his 16 ft. red and white runabout, powered by a 50hp Mercury, winning several trophies. His winning secret was adding ether to his fuel tank.
There would be another adventure with good friend Albert Cheys as Dad and Albert successfully built an A frame cabin at Lake of the Woods. All the materials were hauled by boat 25 miles. Imagine that! After all the hard work, they enjoyed many successful fishing trips to this cabin.
After learning the tricks of the trade in carpentry and construction while working with his father, Dad became the Head of Maintenance for Gordon Hotels. His new job would take him many miles from Saskatchewan to northern Manitoba. His company vehicle was always a roomy station wagon that came in handy for hunting and fishing trips.
His next and last career was as Manager of Maintenance and Transportation for Norwood School Division. One of his main accomplishments at the school division was redesigning and organizing the build of Nelson McIntyre Collegiate after the fire of 1986. While at the school division he took pride in taking students skiing at Lake O’Hara. He also made two life-long friends, Nick Rigey and Mike Stemkowski at the schoolboard. These two friends were a very important part of his life and many good times were shared. They hunted together, made Ukranian food, and remodeled the Riverton Cabin.
Dad was a very curious, “hands on” kind of man. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t figure out when he put his mind to it. He also liked to pass his knowledge on to others and became a mentor to many. He especially loved kids and loved to teach them how things worked. In addition to passing this knowledge on to his own children he also devoted special attention to “Keith Pynoo”, who was a dear nephew.
After the kids left home, Dad met the love of his life, Merle. The family instantly expanded with the addition of three step children, Shannon, Holly, and Stuart. These were busy times and fun times with the extended family.
Soon Dad and Merle struck out on a new exciting adventure by building a home in the North West Angle, MN. With many hours of hard work and love, they made their own little paradise. Merle loved working on the landscaping while Dad helped the lodge owner with various projects, including building several more cabins. Word has it he also spent many happy hours as a fishing guide.
Dad and Merle also took some time to travel and made many trips down to Corpus Cristi, Texas. They also visited Venezuela and Mexico.
After spending many happy years at the North West Angle, it was time for a new chapter in their lives and they made the big move to Pinawa, Manitoba. They made many new friends and settled into their new community. Dad was very involved with restoring the Pinawa Golf Course. Meanwhile, Merle had to figure out ways to keep all those friendly deer from eating her beautiful flower gardens. While the deer could be pesky, Dad loved to see them in the neighborhood. He had a fondness for all animals. If a dog was nearby, Dad would always take the time to stop and give belly rubs.
Dad and Merle very much enjoyed their time in Pinawa but after a few years it was time to move back to Winnipeg so they could be closer to their family. Over the years the Pynoo family had expanded to include several spouses: Carol(Barry), Dawn(Brian), Art Jr(Jennifer), Mike(Nola). Merle’s children: Shannon(Bill), Holly(Bud), Stuart(Liz). With children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, the family spanned five generations.
Dad and Merle made the most of their final years enjoying the company of friends and family.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Sadly, Dad had to say goodbye to his beloved Merle on Aug. 1st, 2023.
It gives us comfort knowing they are reunited once more and they are at peace.
We will always love you Dad, you will be deeply missed but we will forever carry you in our hearts.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
