Arthur Birkholz Obituary
With great sadness we announce the passing of Arthur Birkholz of Leduc on January 13, 2025. He passed away quietly in the Leduc Community Hospital at the age of 91 years after a brief hospital stay.
Arthur was born in Edmonton on October 11, 1933 to Julius and Lydia Birkholz and raised on the family farm near Ardrossan – a farm that remains in the family to this day. He worked on the family farm until 1950 before pursuing a lifetime career in construction. After brief stints with Poole Construction and Ziedler Millwork, Art started employment with BIRD Construction in 1951. In his 27 years of service at BIRD, he apprenticed (earning his Journeyman in Construction at SAIT in 1960) and worked his way up to a Construction Superintendent.
On March 23, 1963, Art married Lucy Lange (nee Radke) and became a father to Rudy and Doris Lange. There are stories of how he won Lucy’s heart through the hearts of her children. Together, Art and Lucy had 3 children: Bernice, Gary, and Randy. Art and Lucy moved from south Edmonton and bought a farm 3 miles west of Leduc in 1972 to raise their young family. Lucy tended to the daily responsibilities of the farm as Art’s supervisory responsibilities with BIRD Construction took him all over Alberta and into Saskatchewan, B.C., and the Northwest Territories overseeing school, hospital, house, hotel, and warehouse projects. In 1978, Art changed employment and worked for Kraft Construction, supervising multi-million dollar projects, such as the Leduc Courthouse, Leduc Civic Centre and Library, and the Edmonton Young Offender Centre.
Art was dedicated to providing for his family and serving his community. He served on the AB Legacy Development Society, Leduc Chamber of Commerce, and the Leduc Downtown Progress Association, to name a few. In his retirement, when he wasn’t at home, he could probably be found at the Leduc Heritage Grain Elevator. In 2014, the City of Leduc recognized his servanthood to the community as a “Citizen of Distinction” with the Culture and Heritage Recognition Award.
Art is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lucy Birkholz, his children Doris (Bruce) Chaput of Sherwood Park, Bernice (Greg) Ferster of Leduc, Gary (Marcie) Birkholz of Barrhead, Randy (Caroline) Birkholz of Leduc, 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, as well as numerous extended family members. He also leaves to mourn his siblings Margaret Heppner, Mary (Lawrence) Heppner, Norman (Jane) Birkholz, Lil (Bill) Laiss, and Eileen (Oskar) Pretzlaf. He was predeceased by his parents, son Rudy, grandchildren Shane Lange and Connie Posein, sister Irene Nickle, brother-in-law Clem Nickle, and brother-in-law Ernest Heppner.
A service to reflect on Art’s life and legacy will be held on Monday, January 20, 2025 at Leduc Fellowship Church at 2pm. A viewing at the church will be held prior from 1-2pm. A live stream option will be available and accessible via the church’s website.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Leduc Community Hospital Foundation.
