It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Arneta
Crowley, a beloved educator, devoted Catholic, and a cherished family
member who left us peacefully on Friday, January 3, 2025 at the age of
82.
Born and raised on the family homestead in Cork, New Brunswick, Arneta
developed a deep appreciation for hard work, learning, and the value
of a strong education. From an early age, she was taught the
importance of knowledge and perseverance. As a child, she attended a
one-room schoolhouse, where she made many fond memories with her
sister, Lillian, who would pedal them both home on the bicycle after
school.
Her educational journey continued with train rides to Harvey for high
school and then to New Brunswick’s Teacher College, where she
began to shape her future as a teacher. Arneta went on to earn her
Bachelor of Arts from the University of New Brunswick, followed by a
Master of Arts from the University of Maine at Orono. She spent more
than 35 years as a passionate educator, teaching at the elementary,
high school, and university levels, always striving to inspire her
students to value education and to seek knowledge beyond the
classroom.
In addition to her academic achievements, Arneta was a lifelong
learner herself, constantly reading and exploring new subjects. After
retiring from teaching, she enjoyed traveling abroad, experiencing new
cultures, and further expanding her horizons. Throughout her life she
enjoyed a good cup of coffee and many hands of cards with family and
friends, cherishing the time spent with those she loved.
Arneta was a devout Catholic, attending Immaculate Conception Church
(Cork Church) and later becoming an active member of St.
Theresa’s Parish in Fredericton. Her faith was a cornerstone of
her life, guiding her with a deep sense of compassion, kindness, and
humility.
She will be lovingly remembered by her family, friends, and students
as someone who not only imparted knowledge but also taught the
invaluable lessons of kindness, determination, and the importance of
community. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched over
the years.
Arneta is survived by her cherished sister, Lillian Mazerolle, her two
nieces Shona Mazerolle of Fredericton, NB and Shyann Mazerolle (Doug
Freeman) of Calgary, AB, and nephew Mark Mazerolle (Cathy) of Calgary,
AB. She also is survived by a great-nephew, Benjamin Mazerolle of
Calgary, AB.
She was predeceased by her parents Neil and Frances Crowley as well as
her brother-in-law, George Mazerolle.
At Arneta’s request there will be no funeral or visitation. Her
ashes will be interred on the family plot at the Church of the
Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Cork, NB at a later date. In lieu of
flowers, donations may be made to the Cork Cemetery Association (37
Kingfisher Shore Road, Harvey York County, N.B. E6K 2A4).
