Annie’s Obituary
Anna (“Annie”) Maria Albertina Hoogendyk
September 13, 1931 – January 21, 2025
Annie Hoogendyk (Schuttenbeld), aged 93, passed away peacefully at The Carleton Manor in Woodstock, New Brunswick on January 21, 2025 from complications related to pneumonia. Born in Enter, Overijssel, Netherlands on September 13, 1931, she was the daughter of the late Jan and Gezina (Bokdam) Schuttenbeld.
Annie married the love of her life, Gerald Jacobus Hoogendyk, in 1954 and soon after immigrated to Canada to settle in Fredericton, New Brunswick. They welcomed two sons, Gerald (Gisele Hudon) and John (Anne Connolly), and together they built a very successful dairy farm. Annie’s determination and hard work lead to both sons following in her example to have their own thriving dairy farms: Gerald in Jacksontown, NB, and John in Elgin, ON.
Annie and Gerald Sr. moved to Jacksonville in 1990 to be closer to the farm there. This allowed them the absolute pleasure to regularly partake in the 4 pm “coffee break” to catch up with Gerald Jr. and his family. Although they were largely retired from the direct management of the farm at that time, Annie and Gerald Sr. still enjoyed offering a helpful opinion; Annie was always a very savvy businesswoman. She supported her son’s decision to host many agriculture students from the Netherlands for a work placement term on the farm, and offered encouragement and advice to the ones who chose to also immigrate to Canada following the completion of their education.
Annie and Gerald Sr. were very social in the Dutch-Canadian community, and often enjoyed taking little road trips to visit many of the Dutch farmers who settled in New Brunswick. Some of those road trips were more adventurous, as they also toured across Canada and the USA in the late 80’s, car camping along the way. Annie had a special affection for the less fortunate, regularly financing well-building in parts of Africa and covering the educational costs of many students in India through the Save a Family Plan charity.
Annie is survived by her son, John, one sister, Riny, and one sister-in-law, Marie. She is predeceased by her loving husband, Gerald Jacobus Hoogendyk (2004), her son, Gerald Jan Hoogendyk (1995) and her other 9 siblings, Father Guido (1979), Bernard (1981), Johan (1927), Johan (1928), Johan (1995), Jan (2002), Aloys (1958), Riky (2006) and Harry (2018).
Annie has seven grandchildren: Angela, Andre, Monica (Gerald & Gisele) and Mark, Elizabeth, Emily, and Peter (John & Anne). She also has 18 great-grandchildren, Hayden, Hayley and Hannah (Angela & Kenn), Nathan and Ian (Andre & Angela), Kyla, Myles, Layne and Clay (Mark & Sarah), Felicity, Lauren, Meredith and Theo (Elizabeth), LeeAnne and Emma (Emily), and Anna, Robert and Marie (Peter & Emily). She loved them all deeply and would jump at any opportunity to spend time with them; treating them out to an ice-cream was a ‘must-do’ when together. Annie made a lasting impact on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, her many nieces and nephews, as well as family friends and neighbors. She will be fondly remembered.
Funeral Service will be held at Scott’s Funeral Home in Woodstock, NB in May , immediately followed by the burial at the Calvary Cemetery. Exact day and time will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to a charity that is close to your heart in her honor.
