After a brief battle with an unrelenting illness, Anne Acton Fraser (née Bulloch, born January 1, 1950) left us just hours shy of the first day of spring. The changing season feels especially bittersweet, as it carries with it so many unfulfilled plans—outdoor adventures, family gatherings, lacrosse games, graduations, beach days, and all the moments she was meant to share with us.
Anne poured her heart into making life perfect for those she loved. She gave us everything that was good. All our successes are because of her. Her greatest joy was her family: her beloved husband of 56 years, John; her daughter Christy and her husband Mike; her son Lee and his wife Cara; and the lights of her life—her three grandsons, Alex, Andrew, and Adam. Every phone call with her son ended with the same request: “Give my three boys a hug.”
Born in Sudbury, Ontario, Anne dedicated her early years to teaching before stepping away to raise her family. Later, she returned to work with Scouts Canada, where she found purpose and community until her retirement. Through every chapter of her life, she was the backbone of her family—caring for her parents, supporting her husband’s pursuits, championing her children’s dreams, and giving selflessly to those around her.
Anne’s to do lists were numerous and endless. Always focused on checking off another task, another plan, another thing to take care of. But when she allowed herself a moment to unwind, she found happiness in her yard and garden, the warmth of a campfire, the sound of the water, and simply being outside. A glass of white wine (with ice cubes) and a handful of peanuts for her chipmunks (her “chippies”), were all she needed for a perfect evening on the deck. She never ‘wanted’ a dog, but she adapted seamlessly to being a dog grama to her kid’s many furry friends, providing countless treats, ear rubs, and Christmas gifts.
Monday phone calls from her eldest grandson were the highlight of her week. And though she was never a real sports fan, she became a fierce supporter of lacrosse, watching her boys play every game she could. She even recently confided that she was finally beginning to “understand the sport”—a testament to her boundless love for them.
In her final moments, Anne shared that she lived a good life and was going to “go to sleep now” – the same words her mother shared with us in her last moments only a few years ago. We are heartbroken, and though we all feel robbed of time with her, she left us with an unspoken mission: carry forward the love she gave us, hold onto the things that brought her happiness, pause in the moments of life that would have made her proud, and above all, take care of one another.
A celebration of Anne’s life will be held this summer. Please honor her memory by spending time outside, embracing the people you love, and making the most of every day—just as she would have wanted. In lieu of flowers, consider honoring Anne’s generous spirit with a donation to a charity close to your heart.
