When Anna Sardella was born in Pisticci, Matera, Italy on March 8, 1927, they didn’t expect her to make it through the day. She showed her strength and determination by having a beautiful life that spanned 98 years. Anna passed away peacefully in the early morning of March 20, 2025, while holding her daughter’s hand.
Anna was the catalyst for moving her family to Canada in 1950 where she married her late husband Rocco Di Leo in 1952.
Her life revolved around her family. She is survived by her children Adele Newton (Peter), Micki Di Leo (Bruce « Giambrusch » Snowden), Mary Ann McKlusky (Doug), John Di Leo, and Etta Di Leo (Dave Johnston). She adored her grandchildren, Adam Ostrowski (Tamara), David Newton (Caryl Davies), Evan McKlusky, Erin McKlusky (Josh Muench), Savannah Di Leo and Cassidy Di Leo. Her great granddaughter, Alice Ostrowski, brought her great joy. Anna is survived by her sister Bianca Plati as well as her nieces and nephews in Canada and Italy, whom she loved dearly.
Anna was a remarkable woman who delighted everyone who knew her. She was a storyteller who loved to laugh. She was a prolific reader whose taste ranged from Dante’s Divine Comedy (in Italian and English) to Erma Bombeck to Stephen King. She knit and crocheted beautiful blankets and sweaters. She loved a good scary movie. She was an amazing cook who loved to try foods from around the world. She also loved a good hotdog.
Anna was incredibly generous and believed in giving to those in need and loving those who were marginalized by society. She was a lifelong Liberal who deeply regretted the one time she accidentally voted conservative.
Anna also had a deep faith in God.
In 2017, after the death of her husband, Anna embraced the adventure of a new life at the age of 90 and moved to Waterloo to be near her daughters. She lived independently in her new home at Luther Village on the Park. During the pandemic, she knit dishcloths that were sold to raise money for the Food Bank of Waterloo Region as well as other charities that were close to her heart.
Special thanks to her friends Robin MacDonald and Roxanne Cowley. Many thanks to the nurses and doctors at St. Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener and Hospice Waterloo Region for making Anna’s last days peaceful.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Hospice Waterloo Region or The Food Bank of Waterloo Region.
