Anna Goossen Obituary
We are saddened at the passing of our mother, Anna Goossen, who went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 14, 2025. She was predeceased by her husband Erwin Jakob Goossen (2008), her parents, Abram and Anna Klassen, her brother Abe Klassen, sister Katie Heier, and son-in-law, Frank Giesbrecht.
Mom was born in Kronstal, Russia (now part of Ukraine) during the turbulent decade leading up to the Second World War. Like so many of her generation, being born in this part of the world meant fear was a constant reality. However, she survived famine, persecution, hardship and war. Her education was sporadic but she reflected with gratitude on the few opportunities she did have. Grateful for the work of Mennonite Central Committee, who helped to relocate refugees from that conflict, her family made their way to Canada after living for a number of years in Paraguay. In Paraguay her family experienced peace and religious freedom for the first time. She was able to go to Bible School, take sewing lessons, and learned things necessary for homemaking in a very different world. It was also where she met and married our dad, Erwin Jakob Goossen, also a refugee from war torn Europe.
Sponsored by aunts and uncles, Mom and Dad came to Canada in 1955, first settling in Port Rowan, Ontario and then finally in Vineland in 1956, where they lived together with their eight children for the rest of their lives.
Mom and dad always instilled in their children a strong measure of gratitude to be able to live in a country like Canada. They worked hard, and got all of us through Christian education, music lessons, and anything else we needed. Mom modelled a consistent and regular practice of bible reading and devotions along with innumerable hours of service to her home church – Vineland MB – especially in the areas of deacon work and particularly in catering/hospitality.
In their later years and retirement, mom and dad extended their generosity and acts of love and kindness to their children’s spouses, along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren. There was always an open door to their home and another place available to be set at the table.
After dad passed away in 2008, mom went through a few transitions where she moved from her home on Glendale Road, to Simons Lane, to the apartments at the Vineland UM home, and finally to the VUM home itself. During the last few years she struggled with physical decline but always had a good one liner, or a spiritual insight, or would sing a favorite German or English hymn. She continued to faithfully read her bible, listen to her favorite preachers on the radio and sing or listen to hymns.
Mom leaves behind her children: Esther (d. Frank) Giesbrecht, Annie and Doug Schulz, Ruth and Rick Wiebe, Martha and Andrew Dyck, Ingrid and Ken Heidebrecht, Laurena and Ralph Tallman, Harvey and Paula Goossen, and Carolyn Goossen. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren, her sister and brother-in-law Mary and Victor Klassen, sisters-in-law Helen Goossen, Alvina Klassen, and brother-in-law, Art Heier, along with all of their families.
Our family wishes to express our gratitude to the Vineland UM Home for their excellent care for mom. If you wish, donations can be made to either Camp Crossroads or the Vineland UM Home.
The family will receive friends at Tallman Funeral Homes, 3277 King St. Vineland on Sunday February 23, 2025 from 3-5 pm. Funeral service will be held at Southridge Community Church 3970 Glendale Ave., Vineland on Monday February 24 at 10:30 am. Burial to follow at Vineland Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the burial at Vineland United Mennonite Church Hall, 3327 Menno St. Vineland.
