Ann O’Dowd passed away with grace on March 6th, 2025. She leaves behind her son, Declan (Liza); daughter, Katie (Todd); her two grandchildren, James-Kelly & Gina; and her two sisters Suzie & Jane.
Ann was born January 20th, 1940, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to her parents, Kit and Bob. She attended Northlands International School, where she developed a lifelong love of languages and travel. The family later returned to their roots, settling in Surbiton, Surrey, England. There, Ann continued her language studies while excelling as a natural leader, playing field hockey and tennis. Fluent in French, Spanish, and English, she eventually became the private secretary to the Food and Beverage Manager at the Savoy Hotel in London.
However, her adventurous spirit led her to Barcelona, where she spent the next decade.
In 1969, Ann embraced yet another new adventure, moving to Toronto, where her sister Suzie lived. Shortly after arriving, she met Michael O’Dowd at one of the many expat Toronto Lions rugby gatherings and quickly fell head over heels for him. Toronto became the backdrop for a vibrant chapter in their lives, surrounded by a close-knit group of lifelong friends who worked hard during the week and played even harder on the weekends. As their ambitions grew, Ann and Michael set their sights on a new venture—purchasing The Boscawen Inn in Lunenburg. With Ann’s warmth and charm complementing Michael’s skills, they became successful and beloved innkeepers. When she wasn’t working, Ann could often be found golfing with her girlfriends at the Bluenose Golf Course or tending to her glorious runner beans in the garden.
Retirement only made her busier, as she devoted her time to volunteering at Fisherman’s Memorial Hospital, the Lunenburg Art Gallery, and assisting in French departments at various high schools. Her legendary dinner parties on Heckman’s Island were filled with music, laughter, poached salmon, and good company, bringing together both old and new friends in joyous celebration. Ann had a rare and infectious zest for life. She embraced risks and adventure, always finding that they led to something wonderful. She was a devoted wife, a supportive mother, and a grandmother who loved unconditionally. Her warmth, courage, and boundless spirit will be dearly missed. Please raise a glass in honor of Ann, our cherished Chiquitita.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy 3, Lunenburg.
A celebration of her life will take place in July 2025 alongside her beloved partner, Michael. With heartfelt gratitude, we thank you for your love and support.
