Andy’s Obituary
ANDY MOIR, Freeport, NS
Andy died on December 21st, 2024, in Yarmouth hospital, with Chris holding his hand. He was 75. Andy began his journalism career in his hometown of Winnipeg, then continued in Toronto, first in radio with Sunday Morning, and then in television, where he was instrumental in founding CBC’s flagship current affairs program, The Journal. He joined CBC Halifax in 1990, as Senior Producer, and then Executive Producer, of television news. It was there that he met his wife, Chris Callaghan.
Andy cherished his big old house in Freeport, which he had bought in 1978. He and Chris retired from CBC in 1996, married in the living room of the Freeport house, and began a new chapter of their lives when they opened Freeport House Bed and Breakfast, welcoming thousands of guests from all over, for the next several years. During that time and for the rest of his life, Andy worked tirelessly for his Islands community. The hours he volunteered are beyond counting. The monthly newspaper, “Passages”, was his creation. He was key to bringing the new clinic, nurse practitioners, paramedics and an ambulance, to this remote part of the province. He was a founder and leader of the Freeport Community Development Association. He put in the labour to help build beautiful public hiking trails on the FCDA property. Andy loved the natural beauty of this area; when a huge foreign-owned quarry threatened to forever change the landscape of Digby Neck, with little benefit to the local residents, he fought against it. He did his best to assist small local businesses to get going and to succeed. The Museum, the ball park, the greenhouse – all benefited from Andy’s participation.
As a realtor for several years, Andy represented Digby Neck and the Islands with honesty and enthusiasm. Several homes are now owned by clients who became friends.
Andy was a talented woodworker and carpenter. He enjoyed fixing things and maintaining our little hobby farm. Self taught, he loved sitting down at his Baby Grand piano to work on a tune. He was a wonderful dog owner, taking the time to train each of them to be really “good dogs”. He is greatly missed by Shep.
A private man, Andy’s sometimes gruff manner disguised a hugely kind heart. He had an incredible mind; a former CBC colleague aptly remembers him as “scarily smart”.
Andy is survived by Chris, his sister Rita Moir in British Columbia, his Minnesota family – nephew David McLaughlin and family, the McLaughlin clan, and sister Donna. He cherished his friends Grant and Sue MacNeill and Barb Perry, several loved in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Ross and Erin Moir, sister Judy McLaughlin, and brother Brian.
His wishes were that there be no funeral. Instead he asked that his ashes, and those of his beloved dog Valdez, be allowed to drift out over Beautiful Cove, some day when the wind is right.
