Alvin Dow Strayhorn
1936-2025
Alvin Strayhorn, 88, of The Grass Home in
Riverview formerly of Alma passed away suddenly on February 27 th ,
2025, at the Dr. George-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre. Alvin
was born in Riverside, Albert County on July 2, 1936, the son of the
late Harry Strayhorn and Charolette (Dow) Strayhorn. He is survived by
his sister, Joan (Strayhorn) Williams of Riverview. He was predeceased
by his brother Robert « Bob » Strayhorn and his son Brian
Strayhorn.
Alvin spent his early years growing up in Alma. He went to
Moncton High School, then joined the Canadian Airforce. Alvin started
his career as a Linemen at Moncton Light and Power. He moved to the
States in 1966, ultimately settling his family in Connecticut. Alvin
excelled as a lineman for Eversource (CL&P), advanced his
career and ultimately ran the Dispatch Center before retiring from
Eversource in 1991, at the young age of 55. In 1996 he decided to
return to Moncton and ultimately followed his heart back to Alma,
building his own beautiful home on the hill, overlooking the Bay.
Alvin was an avid snowmobiler and made many good friends as a member
of the Snowmobile Club that he supported wholeheartedly. He also loved
hunting, fishing, being out in nature and walking in the woods. Alvin
was a big guy with a big personality and a huge heart. He was known as
« Big Daddy » to many in the community. He was content hanging
out in the garage with the boys, joking and telling stories. When he
got a bit older, Alvin sold his first home on the hill in Alma, and
built another house just up the road, he wasn’t going far!
He enjoyed the true Albert County Man way of life. He will be
remembered for his laugh and smile, and of course that twinkle in his
eye when he was up to something. He left an impression on everyone he
met and had many friends.
Al’s family was his pride and joy, and he treasured
his time with his grandchildren. « He was the best Grampie, who
demonstrated love for his family and grandkids. He had a willingness
to pass on his immense wisdom and could connect with you on many
levels given his gift of being a true kid at heart. He was a self-made
man whose lifetime’s work is something that we look up to.
He will forever be remembered fondly with love ».
Al will be deeply missed by his wife, Joyce (Edgett)
Strayhorn of The Grass Home. He also leaves behind his daughter, Linda
Brooks of Swampscott, MA; daughter, Sharon Cunningham and son-in-law
Kevin Cunningham of Farmington, CT; son, Peter Strayhorn of Moncton,
NB; son, Scott Strayhorn and daughter-in-law Christina Strayhorn of
Portland, CT. Al treasured his 6 grandchildren and his 2
great-grandchildren (Brittany, Brooke, Connor, Spencer, Megan, Danica,
Kevin and Reese). He also leaves behind several close nieces and
nephews, and many dear friends.
The family would like to thank all of the wonderful people at
Grass Home, family members, and friends, who provided such excellent
care for Al over the past few years.
