Allan Howard Koch – 68, Valley. It is with a heavy
heart that we announce Allan Howard Koch passed away on Thursday,
January 2, 2025, at VG Site, QEII, Halifax, after a courageous battle
with cancer. Allan was born in 1956 to the late Lester and
Alice (Nahrgang) Koch in New Hamburg, Ontario and lived there until he
relocated to Truro, Nova Scotia at the age of 21.
He leaves to mourn his wife of 37 years, Julia (Munden);
brothers and sisters, Earl (Lucille), Harold (Grace), Russell (Hazel),
Norman (Gwen), Kenneth (Lorrie), Florence (Fred), Eleanor,
and Shirley; parents-in-law, Gilbert and Ruby Munden; sisters-in-law,
Martina, Paula (Nick), Twyla (Mike); brother-in-law, Gilbert Jr.,; his
honorary family, the Verhoevens; many nieces, nephews, cousins, a long
list of friends and his two cats, Boss & Simon.
Allan was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn.
Al started Northumberland Silo in Belmont Nova Scotia in 1977
with three partners, becoming sole owner at the age of 30, where he
continued working seven days a week until the fall of 2024. His work
ethic was unmatched, always on call, always on the go, always working
for his company. Even on his drive to New Hamburg for Christmas, he
made a stop at a supplier outside of Montreal to drop off and pickup.
Al did take a little downtime, looking forward to two weeks in
February to vacation at Sunset Beach in Montego Bay, Jamaica every
year from 1986 to 2020, where he spent those days relaxing with a
mudslide in hand, reading a magazine or Readers Digest, snorkelling
and playing beach volleyball twice day.
Allan, known by most as ‘Big Al’ due to
the sheer size of his hands and fingers, was known for his strength,
quick wit, sarcastic one-liners and a sense of humor like no other. He
was the source of great knowledge and offered his opinion and advice
when asked. In his younger days, Al was active in playing slow pitch
softball with the Northumberland Silo ball team, drop in volleyball,
Saturday nights with the ‘Always Late’ bowling
team, and he never missed his Sunday 7 am tee time at Mountain Golf
Course, where he got his first and only Hole in One!!! He enjoyed his
summer weekends at the cottage on Shortt’s Lake, water
skiing and ripping around in the speed boat towing whoever was silly
enough to try to stay on the tube. All ‘Good
Stuff’ Al would say.
To know Al was to love Al, and as Al would say when you left
the cottage, ‘Alrighty then, see you next
time’.
As per Allan’s wishes, cremation has taken place
and a celebration of life will be held at his cottage on
Shortt’s Lake, on Saturday, August 30, 2025 –
better known by Al, as Corn Boil Weekend.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Canadian Cancer
Society and/or Colchester SPCA are welcomed.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall –
Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro. Tributes, words of
comfort and memories may be shared at:
