~~~~~~~~~~~
It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Alessandro Volonte on Monday, February 17, 2025 at his residence. He was 86 years of age.
He was known by his friends and coworkers as Alex, and to his nine, loving grandchildren as Nonno. He was a loving husband to his devoted wife of 61 years, Gabriella, and an excellent parent to his three children and their partners, Alex (Alison Mckeown), children Olivia (Joey Lancia), Isaac, Annie, and Ben, Christine (Matthew Rumfeldt), children Willow and Isabella, and Maria (Tom Schnarr), children Gabriella (Connor Laderoute), Ellie, and Tommy. He is survived by his sister in Italy, Franca Volonte Pelizzari and her children Francesco, Jimmy, and Giorgio and their families.
Alex came to New York City from Italy in 1959 on an adventure. He was soon employed with a textile company in the Fashion District, but later drafted into the US army. In recent years, he talked about those days as being challenging, but instrumental in building his character. He returned to Italy in 1963 to marry his long-time friend and the love of his life, Gabriella Vettori. The two of them started the next part of the adventure together in New York City, then moved to North Carolina, and finally settled in Brockville in 1979.
Alex came from a textile family, following in the footsteps of his parents and grandparents who ran a silk factory in Italy. In North Carolina he was the youngest plant manager in his company, managing a mill with hundreds of employees. In Canada, Alex enjoyed his work and his work family very much, managing Prescott Finishing until his retirement in 2008, at 70 years of age.
Over the years, Alex and Gabriella enjoyed visiting family in Italy and travelling to Hawaii, the UK, Europe and the Caribbean. They enjoyed their skiing years when their kids were young, and later their boating years on the St. Lawrence, creating many wonderful memories with their grandchildren and fellow river rats. Alex spent a lot of time on the Brockville tennis courts with friends young and old. He was a sports aficionado who enjoyed following his teams he shared that passion, especially with his son Alex and with his grandkids.
Alex was sharp and curious and was excited to join the computer age when it began. He became well read in his retirement years and evolved his thinking, supporting the tenants of social justice and equitable, loving treatment of all persons.
Our father, husband, Nonno, will be greatly missed. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and was generous, wise, supportive, understanding, open-minded, affectionate, and loving with everyone who crossed his path.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff at the Brockville Dialysis Clinic and Bayshore Home Care Solutions for their excellent care and kindness.
Family and friends may pay their respects at the Irvine Funeral Home, 4 James St., E., on Friday, February 21, 2025 from 4 – 7 pm. A funeral mass celebrating his life will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church, 66 Church St., Brockville on Saturday, February 22 at 10 am. A private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, you may make donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Brockville General Hospital Foundation, or Harvest Sharing.
