Giigido Binesi
(Talking Thunderbird)
Ken was born January 13th, 1952 in Portage la Prairie, and passed away on February 11, 2025 in Portage la Prairie at the age of 73 years.
Lovingly remembered by his children Jeanna (Anthony) Emms of Portage la Prairie, James Ward, Jurate Ward (Jeff), Rikki-Lee (Paul) Sawler, Shane McIvor and Dallas McIvor of Winnipeg, grandchildren, David (Marlena) of Selkirk, Joshua (Kisha) and Angus of Portage la Prairie, Alita, Dillion, Camilla, Cody, Roger and Tres of Winnipeg. He will be missed especially by his great-grandchildren Jennifer Ward (AKA Juniper), Johnny, and Robbie, who loved to spend days with him eating cookies and watching broken car shows.
Dad was predeceased by his mother, Jean Doris Baron (Ward), half-sister Jewel, half-brother Trevor and daughter Theresa Rennie.
He also leaves to mourn his passing brother Dewayne Ward and his sons Ryan, Scott, and Jeff of Victoria, BC, brother Randy Baron of Portage la Prairie, half-siblings Bruce Barry of Sooke, BC, Grant and Gavin of Kelowna, BC, His Uncle Pat (Jan) of Portage la Prairie, Aunty Barbs of Edmonton, Aunty Judy (Otis) and Uncle Bert of Nova Scotia as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He will be remembered fondly by his special friend Loriann, his “Doctor” Debbie Parker, and his son-in-law Anthony.
Dad’s presence will be most missed by his beloved Aunty Darlene and Uncle Ken, who were like parents to him, and by the siblings in his heart, Leslie, Cathy, and Kenny. Throughout Dad’s life, they provided unwavering support and love that carried him through many difficult times. Dad always knew that whatever storm he faced, they would face it with him. This love was something he always knew was unquestionable and guaranteed.
Dad was a water man; he worked tirelessly to help many communities have clean, safe water. Whether it was travelling winter roads with a bag of sandwiches, flying in a bush plane, likely with fish packed into his luggage or being boated into the next job, his passion for helping others and his wild spirit made every trip an adventure.
He worked for Northern Water Environment and Training Services LTD. Arnason Industries, and before he retired last year, he worked for the West Region Tribal Council. His dedication to any job he worked on made him an asset to any company lucky enough to have him.
My dad had itchy feet. He was always on the move and up for an adventure. His time spent in the bush, paddling canoes, and hunting showed his love for the great wide open.
The family would like to thank Dr. Boyd and Dr. Arbuckle for their attentive care of Dad, the kind and compassionate nurses in emergency, and our Nurse Kailee for being so respectful and caring.
We will celebrate his life on Wednesday, February 19th, at 1:00 pm at McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel, 56 Royal Road South, Portage la Prairie, MB. A private interment will take place in Hillside Cemetery at a later date. The service will be livestreamed, to register and view the service please click link below.
As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made in Dad’s memory to Central Plains Cancer Services.
A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel. www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com
