Obituary for Alain Joseph Médéric Gilles Leblanc
July 22, 1950 – December 7, 2024
Alain was born in Trois Rivière, Quebec. He moved to California as a child. At 17, unable to work due to mental health, Alain left home. He travelled north to Canada, and east to Trois Rivière, finally settling back in Vancouver. Alain was a sweet gentle soul, polite, shy and reserved. He loved music, played guitar, enjoyed style, made collections of drawings, & the written word. He collected treasured meaningful items. Alain was a man of faith. He followed the 10 commandments, and he was generous to others in need. In his younger years he walked long distances daily. He had a few loyal friends who watched out for him, shared meals, moments, adventures and became part of the fabric of his life. In 2005 Alain, thanks to Strathcona Mental Health, moved into a brand-new supportive housing project, a secure apartment, and received assistance for his condition. This and guardianship improved his quality of life and health. It paved the way for reconnection with family, travels to visit, and peace of mind that he was safe.
Alain was preceded in death by beloved parents Theodore and Lilianne Leblanc. He is survived by sisters, Nicole Spicer, Suzanne (Gary) Linderman, Ginette (Ray) Debrouwer, nephews, and niece: Nicholas, and Stephen Miles (Nicole’s boys) and Hollie, & Toby Linderman; and many great, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Alain tread softly through this world. He touched the lives of many with his grace.
A private memorial and scattering of ashes will be held by family, and close friends.
Many thanks to Strathcona Mental Health Team, The Bloom Group (adult guardianship), the Kathryn Sanford Housing Society (quality, affordable supported housing to persons with a mental illness), the Smith Yuen Apartments (Seniors supportive housing). Thank you to the Portland Hotel Society staff at Alain’s apartment, and to all staff at the North Shore Hospice, who provided care for Alain in his last months.
