BORTOLUSSI, Kathryn Ann
March 17, 1984 – August 31, 2025
With deepest sorrow and broken hearts, we share the passing of Kathryn Ann Bortolussi on August 31, 2025. After a strong and courageous battle, Kathryn left this world surrounded by the boundless love of her family.
Kathryn is the adored wife of Kevin Bernardo, devoted mother to their cherished daughters Olivia and Evelyn, “princess” daughter of Roy and Cheryl Bortolussi, and daughter-in-law of Adam and Dora Bernardo. She is loving sister to Andrea (Mark Lepore) and Jennifer (Bryan Hoenselaar), and sister-in-law to Jason Bernardo (Ashley) and Melissa Calabrese (Marco). Kathryn is the granddaughter of Don and Joyceanne Reynolds and Iride and the late Domenic Bortolussi, with whom she is now reunited. She will be remembered as a Zia with endless warmth by nephews Nolan and Beckett Bernardo, Leo and Jack Calabrese, and will be missed dearly by her many zias, zios, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Kathryn was a woman whose heart knew no limits. She embodied sincere love, genuine kindness, and a thoughtfulness that touched everyone who knew her. Compassionate and empathetic, she always placed the needs of others before her own, offering comfort, encouragement, and warmth without hesitation. Her gentle spirit and generous heart made her not only deeply loved but profoundly admired.
From a young age, Kathryn excelled in academics and was inspired by her Zia Lorraine and Zio Peter to pursue a career in law. After completing her undergraduate degree at the University of Western Ontario, she continued her studies at Michigan State University and the University of Ottawa, where she proudly earned her Juris Doctor degree.
It was during her years at Western that Kathryn met Kevin, the love of her life. Their bond grew stronger with each passing year, and in 2012 they were married, beginning a beautiful life together in Ottawa. Kathryn’s proudest moments came with the arrival of her daughters – her “mini me,” Olivia, in 2015, followed by sweet Evelyn in 2017. While she was deeply dedicated to her profession, nothing gave Kathryn more joy or fulfillment than being a mother. She adored her girls beyond measure and empowered them to grow into polite, strong young ladies, nurturing in them not only a natural sense of leadership but also a joyful appreciation for great style. She was so proud of them, and they will forever carry her strength, love, and light within them.
Kathryn always looked forward to travelling to the Sault to visit family, where she treasured time spent laughing, relaxing, and being surrounded by those she loved. She also held a deep affection for the magic of Christmas, delighting in gathering with family, exchanging thoughtful gifts, sharing meals and desserts, and carrying on traditions. Her joy and excitement during the season made it even more special for everyone around her, creating memories that will continue to warm her family’s hearts forever.
The family wishes to extend deepest gratitude to all who supported Kathryn over the past years. Every prayer, visit, and gesture of kindness gave her strength and comfort during her most difficult days. A special thank you goes to Zia Lorraine (our Fairy Godmother) and Zio Carlo, whose endless love and care were a constant source of comfort, and to Nancy and Steve McLaren, Martina Di Gioacchino and Susie Morassut for their generosity and support. The family also extends their deepest appreciation to Dr. Mark Murphy for his friendship and guidance, and to Kathryn’s incredible medical teams in Toronto and Ottawa, including Dr. Sami Chadi, Dr. Jennifer Croke, Dr. Christina Kim, Dr. Derek Jonker, Dr. Alexandre Rochon and the countless nurses and professionals at Toronto General Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and The Ottawa Hospital. Also, we would like to express gratitude to Rachel Gosevitz for her guidance and support.
Kathryn’s love, kindness, and light will continue to guide all who were blessed to know her. She will forever be remembered as a devoted wife, extraordinary mother, and woman of remarkable grace.
As per Kathryn’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Funeral Mass will be held in Ottawa on September 6, 2025, at 9:00am at Our Lady of the Visitation Parish (5338 Bank St.), followed by internment at Hope Cemetery (4660 Bank St.). A Memorial Mass will also take place in Sault Ste. Marie on September 13, 2025, at 2:00pm at St. Gregory’s Parish (71 Estelle St.).
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation (supportthepmcf.ca/ui/PDPMemorial/p/b576639f64ed4e1fa95c0cedf5d273d1) or a charity of your choice.
“Mommy, we know you tried so hard. We love you so much.” Olivia & Evelyn
