Obituary of Betty Josephine MacNeil
It is with deep love and profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Betty Josephine MacNeil, who left this world peacefully at home, surrounded with love on Sunday, July 6, 2025 at the age of 93.
Betty was born in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia on November 18, 1931, and was the daughter of the late Louise Zwicker-Himmelman and Rex Taylor. She was a sister to Joanne Lohnes and the late Charles Zwicker, Robert and David Himmelman.
Mom was a graduate of Bridgewater High School where she enjoyed being involved in a variety of activities, with hockey being her favorite sport. She worked for Irving Oil and was a busy mom raising six children.Faith was a steady and important part of her life, being a devoted member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Bridgewater. She was active in the community and local organizations, volunteering with the hospital auxiliary and served as a past president of the Bridgewater Curling Club.
Our Mom was, above all else, devoted to her family. Her greatest pride was being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother to her six children, fourteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. She loved to reminisce of the early days, packing up the station wagon with dozens of homemade cookies on hand for the annual Cape Breton summer vacations. There are also lots of stories and adventures involving the boys over the years, they certainly kept Mom busy. We have a lifetime of cherished memories, funny stories, family gatherings, birthday celebrations, hosting parties with friends and neighbors, good times and sad times – with Mom at the core of it all. She treasured the adventures she shared with Dad, traveling around the world – Japan, Rio de Janeiro, and Hawaii held special places in her heart. More recent years were filled with spending time at the family cottage in Broad Cove and being her grandchildren’s biggest cheerleader. She was a talented knitter, avid bridge player, loving baker and curling fan.
Betty is survived by her children Valerie (Tom) Feindel, Maitland Forks; Peter MacNeil (Tanya Shaw), Broad Cove; Charles (Jo-Anne) MacNeil, Pleasantville; John (Catherine-Anne) MacNeil, Pleasantville; Lisa (Stephen) Burton, Bridgewater; loving grandchildren, Emily, Nathaniel & Stephen Feindel; Matthew, Jonathan, Alex MacNeil & Anna Weeks; Adam, Michael & Kate MacNeil; William, Christie & David MacNeil; Christopher & Sarah Burton; twelve great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her husband Norman and son Gary who we know arewaiting for her with open and loving arms.
Words cannot truly capture the beautiful soul Mom was. She was loving, kind, patient, and generous; her love and care will continue to influenceour lives. A life well lived. We love you and are going to miss you Mom, Nanny and Great-nanny.
There will be no visitation at the funeral home by request. A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 15, 2025 at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Pleasant Street, Bridgewater, Father Keith Billard officiating. Private family burial will follow in St. Joseph’s Church Cemetery. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. Family flowers only. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Lunenburg County Branch of the VON, South Shore Hospice Palliative Care Society, St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, Bridgewater, or a charity of choice.
