A beautiful heart stopped beating on March 5th. The family announces with great sorrow his passing in Sudbury at the age of 78 years. Beloved husband of Mary-Lynn (née Kirkwood) Andersen. Son of late Neils Andersen and late Josephine (née Weston-Webb) Andersen. Loving father of Dana (Don), Greg, Erika (Sean), Joel, Lauren (Travis), and Danika (Rob). Dear brother of Joanna (Peter), Mark (Vi), and Sarah (late Scott). Cherished “Poppy » to River, Audrey, and little Lauren. Joel is lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, brothers and sisters-in-law, relatives, and friends as a fun-loving, vibrant soul who loved to laugh and tell jokes, always had the sauna ready to go, and who could dish a good-natured jab as well as he could take one. With his friends and family, he enjoyed skiing, kayaking, and fishing trips, RoQUa weekends, dinners, countless card games and an open door to all at his home and his much-loved cottage on Lake Panache.
Joel was a graduate of Queens University, where he earned his medical degree and won the first Vanier Cup as part of the football team. Ever the athletic enthusiast, Joel provided medical services for the Sudbury Wolves, Sudbury Spartans, and for Top Glove Boxing. A talented and dedicated physician, he cared for many in his family practice, at the Four Corners Walk-In Clinic which he started, at Extendicare, in the hospital Emergency dept., and in patient’s homes. Close to his heart was his work in obstetrics, which saw him deliver thousands of babies over his career. Joel enjoyed his work at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine, was a pioneer in Occupational Medicine, and was the first physician consultant for the Sudbury Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic.
Joel had a unique ability to connect with people and never missed an opportunity to express gratitude. This led him to be involved in many charitable initiatives and volunteer work, most notably with Olympia sports camp, the YMCA of Sudbury, and in Cap Haitien, Haiti. The family would like to issue special thanks to the health care practitioners who cared for him over his final months.
A memorial will be held at a future date to accommodate those unable to travel during the winter months.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the COOPERATIVE FUNERAL HOME, 222 Lasalle Blvd, Sudbury on March 13 from 2-8 p.m. A tribute will be live streamed between 6 and 7 p.m. to view please click the following link and use the password: Joel#1. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on March 14 at 11 a.m. with Mater Dei Latin Mass Community at St-Paul the Apostle Church, 38 Cedar St, Coniston.
